Hi, I just tried to do a search and it seems to not be working. I'm not sure if I posted something similar to this, but need some help here.
My a/v's only seem to grow well on my West windowsill -- and it's not very large. I have the rest of my a/v's on end tables in my living room in front of south windows. I originally had them on the windowsill before I knew that I was toasting them with too much strong south sun. anyway, they don't seem to do well on the end tables which are several feet from the south windows, so I was thinking I may have to get a pretty plant stand with lights in it. (must blend in with living room furniture). I can't do any of the "make your own" - it has to be a stand with lighting already in it (I am not handy and neither is my dh). Anyone know who sells this type of product?
Thank you all - I love this place, you all are so generous with your help and assistance,
Maureen
Plant stands
Maureen -
I have three stands (two have 4 shelves and one has only 3) from IGS. They are not cheap but go very nicely with our furniture. The rest of my plants are on do-it-yourselfers which are in our utility room. Go to indoorgardensupplies.com. I think you will like the choices they have. I went with the dark brown metal.

Thank you so much Nancy, I'm going to check there is a minute.

Wow, nancy - this company has a great selection. I found one that might go nice in my bedroom -- what do you think about this one, would it be good for a/v's -- are 2 20w bulbs strong enough?

Let's see if this works, it's the stand for 83.00 -- 2nd row in the middle.

Maureen -
I had two of the long stands for years and the plants did very well. Then I got into AV's big time and needed more shelves.
The 20 watts will work fine. The stand is only about 24". Is that the size you want or something larger? Each tray will hold about 5 standard sized plants or 8 semiminis.
Nancy
I may need something bigger.....going back to look again. Thanks Nancy

I have 1 Sunlighter stand - 4 24" shelves and 2 of the wonder carts. The short 24" bulbs are expensive in comparison to the 48".
We seem to be the only two here so far.
Nancy
Sarah - I really like the wonder carts but they are out of my price range. I really want the one for 83.00. I was wondering if anyone else would chime in and give their opion of the one I want.
Anyone?? Help?? Please......... it may be my Christmas present to me:-)
Maureen
Maureen I love it ! Perfect Christmas gift :)) Hope you get it !
Thanks Allison. I think it will really help me growing a/v's. The good window I have (west) is already full.
I don't know if this helps, but here's the plant stand I put upstairs last December (it's overfull now)... I got the stand at Sam's, and by the time I added 6 double T-8 florescent light fixtures (there are two on the lowest shelf because it doesn't get light from the window), bulbs, and a power strip and timer to run everything, I think my total cost was nearly $200.
That's a good thought also Jill after paying shipping cost.
Maureen the stand your looking at has been on my wish list .
I have one window shelf ( Not many windows in our new home sense the whole front of our home 24 feet x 12 ft is screen porch) . I have a small light under a shelf in our dinning room with few babies there. I have endless amounts of Alsobia Cygnets, E. F. Blue Heavens, some Begonias, We have a door in the living room Hubby is going to take out and put a large window !! It's a door we don't use and it has a sweet little corner foyer entrance and gets nice light . I could have window shelves and put a tiny stand there :)) There is also a small coat closet there great for suplies ! This is just a dream for Spring or my May Brithday :)) If Hubby gets back to work.
Well anyways it's a nice stand ! What a super Christmas gift for you it will be hope you get it ! or another one :))
PS know what else I like about your stand is it comes with nice trays and the top you can out plants on if by window light. I grow all my gesneriads in natural light and they love it !
An other thing to think about these stands cost a lot beacasue of the light fixtures. You can buy your wish stand on sale for only $28.00
http://indoorgardensupplies.com/economy-stand-green-frame-green-trays-p-619.html
and then buy the 2 ft. grow lights at Wal-mart, Lowes, HD . Hubby bought me one for $8.00 . The way he has it hooked up I just have to lift the light switch. Most likly this would save you more money and you could buy a few new plants :))
Definitely a good idea to check into the cost of fixtures & bulbs locally... and remember that you don't necessarily need fancy "grow light" bulbs, that regular florescents work fine... I think Snowrose mentioned something recently about using "warm" bulbs or a mix of "warm" and "cool" tubes if you have double-tube fixtures.
I wish our Sam's carried those stands!!! I had to pay a lot more for the ones that I bought.
Nancy
I bought gro-lights the first time but when replacing I did not have money for same. So I used two cool lights. These worked great !
We ran the lights at night during the winter to help keep the plants warm and ran them at night also during the summer so our A/C would not have to work so hard.
If you can afford gro-lights they are the best and the African violets use 100 percent of the colors when the others they use only 50 percent and they cost less to run so in the long run they cost you less.
But your plants will love either ones !
