I broke down and bought a Kodax Easy Share digital camera about 3 weeks ago. When I try to down load the software,I get a dialog box that says I need an upgrade.I'm too computer illeterate to know which one. Link provide for Microsoft webpage gave me 3 options:
Windows 2000 w/Service package
Windows XP Home
WindowsXP Professional
I took a look at the second. It gave a long list of requirements that my computer needs to upgrade to it but once again,I'm to computer retarded to know anything but I have a simple gateway w/ Windows 98
HELP! I want to take pix of my plants babies to bore ya'll with.

HELP!
Do you mean you are running Windows 98? If you are, your new digital camera might not work with your computer as it is. The bad news it that it seems to be saying you need to buy and install one of these three system upgrades. Hopefully, your computer isn't too old to run them...
Is this to install the whole Kodak Easy share package onto your computer then? Did you get the camera by itself or with the docking/printer station?
Jacki
Yes,I'm running Windows 98. I have no problem buying an upgrade. I just don't want to buy one that won't work w/this computer.
It's just the camera. No docking/printing station.
P
Microsoft isn't supporting Windows 98 anymore, so you aren't likely to find any upgrades for it. You definitely don't need any of the upgrades that you listed. Don't click on any of them.
Try ignoring the whole software package that comes with the camera and just hooking the camera up to the computer. If Windows will find it and get the pictures off without the software, you don't need Kodak's programs anyway. :-)
I'm running 98 windows also. I have my camera sense I think last Jan or so gift from friends here on DG ! I think you must have a camera that runs on 98 windows or upgrade.
Probaly any of those upgrade will be good just depends on your needs. I don't use my computer much .
Either someone here can help you or at the store they can help you sometimes you can get help on line live or 800 number too !
WOW I knew someone could help you ! Good luck can't wait to see all you pictures :))
I think MaryLyn's advice is a good one. Try it without installing the Kodak software. Do you have any program that works with pictures already on your computer? Because you could use that to crop, sharpen, turn the pictures from your camera... :)
Ok,I'm just gonna have to fiddle w/ it until daughter comes for Christmas. Maybe I can figure something out.Have to see if there's any kind of program for photos on here.
*Sigh* I need to go to computer school.
P
I checked my programs. I have MGI Photosuit.

Do you have a USB port on your computer? It's the kind of plug in that takes a small flat rectangular plug. Your camera should have come with a USB cord. One end plugs into the camera (probably under a little flap so you have to search for it). This end is a smaller, half-round plug.
So...once you find the cord and the two plug ins :)) try plugging the camera in. And then wait for a minute or so. See if your computer finds it all by itself. If it does, then skip all the "install" this and that and navigate to My Computer. Double click. Now, I think (and understand my memory is totally shot and I can't remember Win 98 hardly at all!!) you should see your C drive. Right? And probably an A drive? Maybe a D drive if you have a cd drive. Okay...there should be a new drive...maybe it's called E. This is your camera. If you double click it, you are looking at the insides of your camera. Sometimes this is another folder and you have to double click a couple of times until you get to pictures. Then you should be able to either double click a picture (which should bring up your photo progam) OR drag your pictures on to the desktop. Remember to save your pictures to your hard drive.
Okay, that's a lot of "shoulds". I know the above directions would work perfectly on Windows XP~~ LOL! This is my best guess.
All that said, the fact remains that you have a great digital camera (I'm jealous by the way) and your operation system, Win 98, is pretty dated. Sorry :( If this doesn't work, or your daughter can't fix it, it might be time to update...
'Course I am a nerd deluxe...I am sitting at my Mac, which is networked with my Windows computer. My husband is in the living room, browsing the net with his laptop which is also hooked to our little network. And we won't even talk about his three different computers upstairs in his music studio...also in our network!! The sweet thing is my husband can build a kick ass computer using old but good parts, a few new pieces like upgrade chips and voile! A new computer that might look kinda old (we still have the big monster monitors) but works like a charm....
I'm a lucky lady :)
Let me know if this helps at all...
Jacki
Can you nip off one of you hub's fingers and get me one of him started like an african violet leaf? LOL My hub's doesn't even know enough to dial-up and I always have to find webpages for him...even then I hear him calling from computer room"Whadda I do now?"
Your description kinda reminds me of the ole"you can't get there from here"chestnut...LOL...but I'm gonna give it my best shot...and yes, camera came w/USB cable and computer has two USB ports.....on the back...wished they were on the front...pain to get to.

Got it all hooked up,took a couple of pix of my episcia seedlings, went to My Computer, found easyshare on C but when I clicked on it ,got"document's data invalid or not supported". Maybe this is why my computer guy said I need a memory card and card reader?
I went to microsoft webpage and clicked on scan for new updates and only got upgrades for foreion lanuages. I have enough problems w/ english other than redneck certainly don't need to be tangling w/ chinese or others.

That's weird my computer is 7 years plus and on 98 windows and I download hundreds of pictures into my computer right from my camera ??
Someone with knowledge will have to help you with this one sorry.
P~ Try just plugging in your camera to the computer, turning the camera on and then just wait a minute. See if the computer says anything in the lower right hand corner. If not, then go to Start, click on My Computer, and see if the computer reads your camera as it's own drive. Not C drive. If you are trying to bypass the software then your want to try and go straight to the camera :) See if that works.
About the memory card...you mean a card for your camera or that you need more memory in your computer? Hard to know sometimes, isn't it?
Allison~ You know it depends on the make of the computer and what chip it's using, etc. Each type has it's own thing going on....wouldn't want it to make sense!!
Good luck~
Jacki
I have Windows 98 and download hundreds of pictures. Your camera will have a memory card somewhere around the base. Check your owner's manual for that. That is what the card reader reads, and you plug it into your USB port, and it will show up in "My Computer" as Drive E. Follow the steps outlined above, as those were correct. Just keep going through the steps and you will find your pictures. Don't give up, whatever you do. Once you do it, it will be a cinch from then on.
I plugged it in,left it for about 5 minuters...nothing. I checked E and F,both said"Is not accessible.Device is not ready"
Memory card for the camera not the computer. Have to drive to next town over to get one. Our flyspeck town WalMart doesn't have diddly squat.
P
When you plugged it into you computer did you have it on the view photos ? And did you turn your camera on ?
I plugged it in,turned it on,hit reveiw which brought up pix I took then it said camera in connect mode and the screen went black...and has stayed that way.
P
OK,Try this...Turn your computer completely off.Ok ..then unplug the usb cord that came with your camera from the back of the computer .OK now with the computer off plug it back into the back of your computer.OK now turn your computer back on. OK now Spin around in your chair 3 times for good luck LOL OK now after your computer goes thru all the motions of coming back on ,plug the other end of the usb cord into your camera and turn camera on.Hopefully that will do the trick? Let us know if that helps.
Good Luck! : ) Nancy
Edited to say: I have a feeling if that doesn't do the trick it would mean the drivers your camera needs aren't installed. If you go to Kodaks website and type in your camera model number it should let you download the necessary drivers free without upgrading anything else. After they are installed your camera should work with any picture program already installed on your computer.Gosh I hope I said that alright.I sure don't want anyone to get the impression I think I'm a know it all.We all know thats not true! : )

Oh you smart people you .... if I ever have trouble with this Mac and my husband (Mac Pete) isn't available, I know where to post my questions! Still don't know if I'd be able to follow the directions though LOL ..... I've been working on computers since the 70's, but just data input and output - I only this year learned how to hook my camera USB port up to the keyboard and download pic's! But, Hey .... I think I would take direction from y'all easier than I take it from my DH! He's a College Professor and sometimes (most of the time) too technical for his blonde wife!

Oh I want to see your pictures !
I think Cedarnest's advice was great...especially important is the spinning in your chair LOL!! How's it going today??
Well,I'm spinning but w/ aggravation. More trouble with my son's 14 yr old daughter and I haven't had a chance to try cedarnest suggestions.
