I am planting my sweet peas now. Usually I plant earlier than this but I haven't had a chance to get them in before this. I mention this because a number of people picked up some heat tolerant sweet pea seeds from me at the Arlington plant swap. This may seem like an odd time to plant seeds but the soil temperature is correct now for thier germination.
Planting Sweet Pea
They are just beautiful! Sorry I missed out on those seeds! :-)
I wish I had some left to send you :-( I gave away all but a few. But I will save you some for next year.
Thank you! I remember how good you are with growing things from seeds! I got some babies from you at our Texoma Roundup (forget me nots) and they did great against this year. :-)
I planted mine about a month ago and I think everyone came up. This is my first time to plant them. I'm excited about the prospects of having them bloom because they are so fragrant.
I just came across an envelope today with a couple of these seeds in it. They're not going to come up now, like barbur's, are they?
Thanks Siggy!
Ya know Jackie, my DD snagged some of those from you too, and we had not planted them yet either, but the thought was weighing on me that it was about time to get them in. I will prepare the pots today for her so she can poke them in there herself when she gets home from school.
I have these 2 square pots with tutuers that fit inside like towers for them to climb up into.
Hope they don't sprout too early.. this weather is something!
They usually can take our freezes. More often what delays their blooms are daylight hours. Depending on the variety they need 12-10 hours of sunlight.
They should come up. They like a ground temperature of 55-65 degrees.

I just planted four pots of them -- seeds I got from Illoquin on the trading forum. I put the pots under an A-frame trellis -- figured it would be better than putting them in the ground, just in case it freezes here before they start twining up. I'm SO glad to know it's a good time to plant them. Sure can't have them down here in the summer!
Terry, I'm glad you had luck with the forget-me-nots mine died.
Siggy ~ I can smell their fragrance just looking at your photo! They certainly evoke memories.
Siggy - just got mine into the ground... hope they look that good. Thank you Mitch
BTW It helps to file or chip the seeds. Also slugs love to eat the seedlings. So you may want to put some slug bait down.
Good tip Siggy! Thanks for the heads up on the slugs! I found some more seeds too, fairly inexpensive. (I mean cheap.) 49 - 99 cents a pack.. All colors.

Deb,
Of those, Matucana would be your best bet for flowering here. Many of the showiest peas fry before they bloom. The newer showy kinds need many hours of sunlight to bloom. By the time we get that many hours here its too hot for them. The varieties that are heat tolerant are Cuthbertson, Winter Elegance and the old fashioned varieties.
I purchased some seeds that I'm going to try this year. Including this one called "America". I hope it does well. http://www.fragrantgarden.com/sweet%20pea%20old%20fashioned.htm
Alrighty Siggy,'
Good to know about Matucana..I am determined to have some, even if slight success with Sweet Pea. I will take it in stride until I arrive.. They are definatly worth it!
Thx
Yes siree!! I just looked at the packages they were in.. She wrote "red & cupid" on one of them.. the other 2 are lt & dk purple, and lilac... Cool!
I found tiny little sprouts this morning! I'm excited -- you just don't get sweet peas here!
