I grew my first brug, from seed, last spring. I have it in a pot - it's about 3 1/2 ft. tall & has looked very healthy. Please indulge a newbie with a few questions:
It's occasionally had some holes in the leaves, that looked "snail-like", but his morning I found half a leaf gone & a skinny black worm/catepillar - can anyone tell me how to rid myself on these varmints?
AND I was shocked to discover my first flower bud, today!!! The brug hasn't "y"'ed , yet, & my reading on this forum led me to believe that there would be no buds, until it "y"ed. I live in the a fairly temperate climate (hills in San Francisco Bay Area), but we (very) occasionally get down to freezing at night, so I'm not hopeful that this flower will make it.
Lastly, I notice a second shoot growing straight up from the base ie. the roots) through the dirt - is this normal?
I'd appreciate any wisdom. THANKS!
Liz
Help for newbie re. my Yellow/Gold "Little Jimmy"
Hi Liz!
First buy some Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Lowes has it. It is not poison to us either which is great. http://filebox.vt.edu/cals/cses/chagedor/btprimer.html
Second, throw a sheet over your brug if you get frost. That is what I do sometimes. Usually it does not get cold enough to do much more damage than freezer burned leaves.
I bet it has Yed and you just missed it. Do you have a picture of it? Or maybe you have a brand new variety that blooms young. Wouldn't that be great.
The sucker you have growing is great for making a standard if you like that shape. They usually grow straight and tall. I leave them on the till they are the height I like because they grow so fast while still attached to the mother.
I bet you can't wait to see what your seedling looks like. So exciting. Realize though that what you see will problaby not look like what you will get in the warmth of summer. They usually improve in appearance.
Hope this info is helpful and WELCOME to the Brug Forum!
PS
I wa sjsu tlooking at the nam eof this thread and got confused. Not an unusual state for me, I might add. LOL So it is a seedling not from a cutting and it has never flowered but you know it is yellow gold and it has a name already? Yellow/Gold "Little Jimmy" Did I misunderstand something?
Kell,
Thanks so much for your reply & info. I think I have some BT, so that's easy! What is "yed" - that's a totally new one to me, ('course that doesn't mean much)... I don't have a picture - maybe when the rain stops...
I bought a seed packet from Onalee's seeds - that's how I know the name.... I tried to germinate 8 seeds, but only had luck with one.... I've admired brug trees for years, but didn't even know the name until I joined DG. I was thrilled to learn that deer don't seem to like them, because there are beautiful flowers they leave alone!
Thanks for your help & welcome.
Liz
Gosh, I wonder if you really have a datura. Sometimes they are sold as brugmansia. Are you familiar with daturas? Datura seed is small and brug seed is big and corky.
It is raining here too in the East Bay. I was out earlier in my hoophose playing. The rain was beating down on top, it was so loud.
Here is a Y.
Edited to say the red dots are buds.
