lots of questions

Campobello, SC(Zone 7a)

I've been saving up for days I guess....sorry!

do I need to somehow heat the barn? is there a safe way to do so? maybe heat lights? It was 18 degrees last night...brrrrr

we just switched to orchard hay as we were having a hard time finding fescue for the boys...and now that we aren't feeding fescue, we are feeding Lady the orchard also (she prego)...can't find anything that says anything on orchard hay. it's ok for her, right?

we have our three, Thump, Lady and Allie and the former house owner's horses here, D and Buddy. D is totally alpha and can be mean at times. We feed our 3 in their stalls and then bring Buddy in and close the barn. Buddy eats in the barn, D eats outside. Mainly because D will try to eat out of everyone's stalls while Buddy just minds his own biz (Buddy is old). But if we feed both Buddy and D outside, Buddy doesn't get to eat because D chases him away until Buddy just gives up. Not my problem I know, but I feel bad so I bring him in. However, lately it seems like D has been picking on Buddy nonstop. Am I somehow causing that by maybe "playing favorites" or disturbing the herd dynamics? Should I just leave Buddy out to eat with D and let him fend for himself? (question posed to D and B's owner is answered as just "let them be, they are fine" but he was also fine with them being out in 18 degrees last night.)

Lady, who looks about to burst, has put her ears back several times when I've put my hand on her side near her belly. Is she hormonal? Is she uncomfortable? Is she testing me? She has not once tried to bite me, she just puts her ears back for a few seconds and turns and looks at me. I leave my hand there and tell her it's ok and she turns her head back around and goes back to whatever it was she was doing.

We are working on Lady's foaling stall. What is the minimum height the walls should be? We would like it to be as low as possible so my DH can see in since it won't be open.

I know I have more, but took to long to get here tonight and I need sleep. Will post more later.

Thanks,
Kristen
