I was just wondering how many of you can get these to bloom, I have had a couple for ever that grow and grow like weeds but have never developed a peduncle. Have you all had any luck with them?
Eriostemma's
Tami, I have a few eriostemmas. I have ciliata, ruthie, coronaria, and at least one or two others whos names I cant recall. It's 19 outside and my brain is frozen!!
Ciliata grows very well for me and had a peduncle on it when I got it. It hasnt fallen off but nor has it produced any flowers.
My first plant of ruthie grew like a weed.I started it from a cutting that Mel sent me.It grew to be about 4ft longorm ore and made several peduncles. One of which the buds on grew to just before opening and then they dropped off.
I ended up killing that plant. I think I had it way overpotted.

Tami - Eriostemmas like to be very potbound and they love to travel...preferably UP. In the wild, they get to a certain height and then they hang down and at that time they will start to bloom. Then hang down until they hit the ground, creep along like a ground cover and then climb another tree!!! Some are VERY difficult to bring to bloom, for me... H. ciliata, H. cv. Ruthie, H. cv. Optimistic are some that bloom constantly. They also like WARM...LOTS of light (even full sun smack in the face). They also prefer shallow pots to grow well...their root system sometimes takes up just the top half of the pot. REALLY well draining soil...

Mine are super pot bound, although they are in a pretty deep pot. Well they do just grow and grow and grow, morning direct sun with a shear curtain after a good three hours of sun. I have all 3 that you mentioned, and sigh :( no signs of peduncles. There getting about 50% humidity all day long too. Oh I am growind tired of these non-blooming juveniles.... And the flowers are so darn pretty... Thanks Carol very helpful info.
Stress them!!!! Hold back water or something. Let them grow higher and then fall down....?
Bummer David, you must have been excited to get it that far though.
Maybe I will let them go wild in the bathroom once I get all of the others outside, up, down, sideways,if that doesn't work there just gonna go bye bye.
From the response to this thread doesn't look like alot people get them to flower. So sad as they are just beautiful
(ahem) - I think *some* of us just plain can't remember which ones are Eriostemmas!
(Well...that's my excuse for non-responsiveness, anyway!)
LOL!!
They are the biggish leafed biggish flowered hoyas like H. lauterbachii, coronaria, sussuela, ciliata, cv. Ruthie, cv. Optimistic etc.
Thanks for that info, Carol!
Is there an official 'complete list' anywhere?
Personally I don't own any of those listed above, but wondering if I own others.
Patti...H. cv. Monette IS an Eriostemma...
Nan...If you go to Ted Greens' Catalogue, www.rare_Hoyas.com ( think) at the end of his Hoyas (or just before them) he has a Section called Eriostemmas and he lists them all...
Carol
Cool Thanks Carol. Added Ted Green website to favorites too. :O)
