Tawny Emperor egg clutch? cluster? pile?

Edinburg, TX

This was on a hackberry leaf at our local NABA IBP...so am assuming they are Tawny Emperor eggs...as we have gobs and gobs of Tawnys there. Sorry the photo is a bit washed out...tried to change the exposure on it to show the eggs a bit better.

oh how cool Cat. Despite getting down into the low 20's I am still seeing a Gulf Frit and Cloudless Sulphur or 2 in the afternoons.

Low 20s????? BRRRRRRRRR!!!!

We start whining about it being cold when it gets below 60 out here...ha ha.

Still good to know there are some brave, if not slightly frozen, butterflies still hanging on. Which reminds me, since we saw several butterflies roosting (aka clinging onto or hiding in foliage during this spot of cold weather) I asked Phil how long do they stay like that (I saw the same butterflies in the same place yesterday and today) - he said they could stay without nectaring for three or so days or longer depending on the weather...so long as they didn't move they wouldn't use up their resources.

Am guessing there were many more butterflies that what we saw...but they are tucked into tall grass and crevasses in tree bark and such...and it's amazing how quickly they come out of their hidey holes when the sun peeks out even when it's still in the 50's and 60's.

Cat this weather is very unusual for us this time of year. This is the second artic blast we have gotten in a few weeks now. Usually don't get any cold like this until late January and Febuary. Last year the perennial MG shrub didn't even freeze back until Febuary. Everything is dead now and we will be back up to a low of 55 for sunday night grrrrrrrrrr then 36 then 40's for the rest of the week and highs of 70
