Plumerias to Canada?

North Augusta, ON

hey everyone,
I have decided that I just have to have a plumeria. After checking the watcdog, I cannot seem to find a good place that will send me seeds or a cutting. Any ideas?
Thank you,
Lee Anne

Lee Anne, there are a couple of people from Canada here on this forum who should be able to point you in the right direction. You might try calling Florida Colors and Maui Plumeria Gardens to see if they will send to you. You might also find a Canadian seller on eBay.

Lee Anne,

I ordered seeds from Maui Plumeria Gardens - Highly Recommended.

Good luck!

Someone here from Canada found them at a nursery or show this summer. You might try doing a search of the threads to see if you can find the information.

Thanks for the info all. Correct me if I am wrong..please..but I have been reading everything in here on these plants and it seems to me they are a lot like an Oleander in their care?

Last year or so I sent two different Plumeria Cuttings to Donna in Canada with some othere items they made it just fine . Are cuttings with no soil or seeds not allowed to be sipped ?
I'd send them again except we only have two plants of size left and cutting of each has already been promised and then we have two small ones we got as cuttings from Bob last Spring they got leaves but did not grow really much maybe one ft and shorter. Hoping for more growth this coming New Year :))

I have shipped plumeria to Europe disguised as something else... like candles.

LA, oleanders are like weeds here and require very little care and are very hardy and hard to kill and grow into huge shrubs. Plumerias are much easier to kill and require a little more attention, fertilizer, and care and grow into beautiful tall trees. They are in the same family but need a little different treatment.

I have heard that it is expensive to ship to Canada and often items are confiscated by Canada's customs.

Oh yes I have had Av's and Gesnerids confiscated by Canada's customs . Once I got a box back a month and half later with just the pot and had to pay the shipping back. Once they threw very exspensive plants away and I got fined.
But those plants were all in soil-less mixes.
Do you know if seeds or a cutting can be sent to Canada legal.
Clare_CA what is the smallest size cutting someone should use to progate a plant ??

Violet Treasure, I sent seeds once to someone in Canada, and they were confiscated. I think Canada has fairly strict regulations, but someone living there would probably know better than I would. I think businesses probably can ship to Canada if they have the proper inspections, certificates, and paperwork completed. I'm sure a phyto certificate is required at the very least for a cutting. In any case, there are sellers of plumerias there, and that is probably the best route to go in the spring. Nothing should be shipped now, given the weather and time of year.

When you say "...a plant," do you mean plumeria? A plumeria cutting can be grafted by using a tiny bud or a tip. If you mean "What is the smallest size plumeria cutting that can be rooted," I think Brad has set the record there with three or four inches, but 12 inches is the standard size for a cutting, and anything less than about five inches is tough.

Thanks for your answers ! Yes I meant cuttings. I like using longer cuttings and giving people longer cuttings also.
Well maybe when it gets warm Lee Anne we can see if sending a cutting is allowed. I sent Donna two long cuttings about a year ago
to Canada they made it find not sure if she was able to root them. One was for yellow flowers one Red flowers I did not know the names. I need to Dmail her and ask if she was able to root them. They were atleast 12 inches long.
I have rooted some small pieces but never thought about the size or kept track of them. I'll have to try some different sizes when it gets warm and see what happens.
I have never grafted how does this work ? Is it hard ?
I am hoping to buy more Plumeiras in Spring names or no names does not mater to us. I was looking a Tea's Nusery anyone ever buy from them ?
Last year Ace Hardware had really nice Plumeria trees all colors for great prices !

Yes, longer cuttings are definitely better if you are going to root them. Shorter cuttings are better for grafting.

Ace Hardware is probably the way to go then. I think Teas is a little pricey, aren't they? Don't forget about Florida Colors Nursery too as their prices are very reasonable.

Grafting isn't hard, but it does take practice. My first few grafts failed. My grafts seem to take easily when the weather is warm and the plants are in growth mode. There is a large section on grafting in the Sticky Thread (at the top of the threads on the main page of the Plumeria Forum). It is all the way down at the bottom if you are interested in reading up on grafting.

I think Donna (Perennial Girl) posted about her plumerias in a couple of different threads here. I do believe that she did get blooms and posted them. I'll see if I can find that thread for you.

I have found cuttings for sale in the Horticulture part of the CNE, if you can wait until next August! Other than that, I ship cuttings regularly to my family when I travel to Hawaii....if you would like to give me your address I can try to send you one. I buy the cuttings that are in the stamped packages from Hilo Hatties or sometimes from the Dole Plantation. I am heading to Maui mid January and would have no problem sending you one, only thing is I can't guarantee a colour or variety, it all depends on what is available at the store. Just let me know if you want one!
