This one smells great. I didn't even see that it was gonna bloom. Total surprise. Things have been busy here. :-)

Beautiful Tami, I've got H. obovata growing. Did yours get very big before flowering. Mine is about 14 inches (350mm) tall

Roy, This one is not really that big. One main stem. I'll try to get a picture of the whole pot in a bit.
Thanks Patti.

Lovely Tami. You are getting a lot of blooms for this time of year. My obovatas bloomed all spring & summer, but have stopped completely now. However...they are both outside and must know it is winter. Ha.
PS: All the ones still out on the olive tree are still doing fine & looking great in spite of temps being down into the mid to low 40s at night. Just no blooms.

Marcy,
I just received this as a cutting this past summer. It has grown well outside but I brought them in when nights were getting down in the 50s. I put them in our sunroom where they have had plenty of warmth and light. I have so many plants in there that its hard to move around and that is why I missed these blooms until the other day. I couldn't believe it. And so many this year have bloomed for me. It makes it all the more addictive. :-)

Very nice, Tami!

My obovata is loaded with peduncles. Some old and some brand new. It bloomed all summer long and is almost 4ft tall. I have it growing upwards on 2 square supports that are bound together and you cant even see them the plant is so full and thick.

MyHoyas, Thanks.

dmichael, Where do you have your Polynura that it is so happy and Please send pictures of your Obovata.

Tami,my polyneura is one of the EA baskets that I bought several months back from HD. It was nice and full and green when I bought it. It didnt take long after gettign it home for all tht to change though,so it hasnt always been happy!

It became yellow, lost leaves got all spotty and just didnt look good. So I hung itunder the wild persimmon tree and left it alone, maybe watering it twice a month and only when it was completely dried out.

It seems to have perked up a bit and i've been watering it with the beer formlua. I now have it in the big gh hanging on the east side and it still appears to be doing okay. Anyitme i get a plant like this that wants to be difficult to grow, I just put it somewhere and ignore it.

dmichael,
What is this beer formula you are so fond of? Sounds like my hoya may need to relax a bit as well.

Tami ,look on page 2 of this forum for the thread entitled fertilzer. That was the original discussion about it but today Carol started a new thread on page 1 with a revised formula for it.

dmichael,
Ok thanks.

dm - Your H. polyneura story sounds like mine!!! I grew mine outdoors and we get lots of rain!!! It doesn't like lots of rain...and it didn't like the warm temps and it didn't like......

Now I ignore it, never water it (or water it with my dischidia) and keep it cool. The spots could be a fungus from too much water for the plant...

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Meant to also add that your blooms are GREAT Tami...you sure have a flowering thumb!!!

New Caney, TX

Carol, That is a great compliment in my mind coming from you. Thanks. I really don't know what I'm doing. Just glad many seem to be doing well. What kind of Soil mix do you have your Polynura in? And how cool do you keep it. I have it now in the sunroom that stays around 70 or warmer. Do you think it would be happier in a 70 or cooler? Aren't you on the big Island? We are planing our trip for May.

Okay. I know I talk about having all of these plants but havent shown any pics yet so here goes. Some of you were probably getting close to saying I bet he doesnt have any of the stuff he talks about he just wants us to think he has it!!

So this is my H. obovata. The pic is sideways but it was taken with my cell phone and I have no idea how to turn it upright!!

The pic is also a little dark but that's because it's 5:30 pm here and already starting to get dark outside.

I grow H. polyneura in the same mix as all my plants...fine orchid bark, perlite, peat and cinders....very lumpy and the water runs thru it fast. I would keep polyneura 70 or cooler...down to 60 would probably be fine...

BTW...I just mixed a batch of the revised 'beer' formula fertilizer and have a test tray going....today is the first day. I also pruned my brugmansias back and gave one the forumula and another one Miracle Gro...gonna see who gets bigger faster!!!

Golly that's a large plant. Mine is so small. The blooms are falling off now. Smelled good while it lasted. Carol, I'm gonna try the beer fert soon. I need to get a few more things first.

Tami

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Sorry for the pic being so dark. I was so excited that I finally found a way to take and post some pics that I went right out and snapped that one and it was almost dark outside.

Dawn, dont be fooled. Obovata is by far not a slow grower,or at least not for me it isnt. It grows like wisteria, you know you can almost stand there and see it grow!!

dmichael

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

Really? Maybe when the weather warms up it will start growing some. Is the smell really strong?
Dawn

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

You know I cant recall if I ever even smelled it or not. Ever heard the expression "take time to smell the flowers" I usually dont!!!

dmichael

Dawn, Its smells great and its strong to me. I usuly don't smell the ones that have bloomed for me unless I get right up to it. Obo was very strong to me.

Tami

One hoya that I can say that I have stuck my nose in and do love the smell is H. cummingiana. I got the plant from Carol a year or so ago and to me it has a strong spicy fragrance.

Another that I have smelled and do not like the scent of is my hindu rope. It has kind of a funky chocolaty smell.

dmichael

New Caney, TX

I will keep my nose and eyes pealed for both. I have never had blooms on either.

Tami
