Where to find Lantana?

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm not sure what type of plant Lantana is so if this is not the right forum could someone please point me in the right direction? If this is the right place, I have a question about it. I want to get some cuttings and start them out in my bubbler so I will have plenty of them potted up when spring comes and it is time to plant them. I have found a place online that will sell me 100 cuttings for $10. First I would like to know if this is a good deal, and secondly, I would like to know if anyone has ever ordered anything from this place before and if the are a reputable company? Here is the website that I found. http://ncfarmsinc.com/store/index.php?cPath=66_125

Thanks,
Jesse

I found that web site the other night. I don't know anything about them.

100 cuttings - $10.00 in my opion is cheap. What do you have to loose $10.00. Lantanas are easy to root. 1 plant covers a 3-4' area easy. What are you gonna do with all thoses plants.

Hey, there could be a lantana co-op with those amounts.

Jesse,

Lantana is a member of the mint family (mint family has square stems) and they are easy to root under warm conditions. I buy rooted cuttings and I have ordered from NCFarms. They sent me a good product, but, their sales guy was a real hustler. I would tell you to make sure that they understand exactly which cuttings you want and if they offer you cuttings that 'are just like' or 'similar' don't buy them. I think 100 for $10 (plus shipping and packing) is the going rate with most companies.

So when is the best time to order these cuttings so that they will be ready to plant in the spring? I'm new to this type of gardening. I can order at any time because I have a greenhouse to keep them in. I was also wondering if I could root them and maybe sell some in the spring but I'm not sure about that yet.

I was wondering what type of pots to use on all of these cuttings. I was thinking of using square pot since you can get more of them in a smaller place. What size pots do you all recommend for something like the lantana cuttings?

What's a bubbler?

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

A bubbler is what I and others here at DG call a homemade cloning machines. Here is a photo of what mine looks like. You can also read more about mine on this thread? http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/674554/

Here is another thread about a bubbler, made a little bit different than mine.

Here is a quote from xeriscape8321 that I think really explains what a bubbler does:

Quoting:
Using a bubbler speeds up the rooting process by oxygenating the water. The oxygen keeps the water fresh for a long time as well. If you tried to root in plain water (say in a jar) the water would stagnate in a few days and you would have to keep changing the water regularly.

When do you all think is the best time to order the 100 Lantana cuttings for $10? I am going to buy some pots soon and was wondering about what size to get. I would like to get the square ones so they would not take up as much room as the round ones. I can get them in 3", 4", 5", etc. Which ones would be best for the lantana?

Thanks,
Jesse

I'm not sure if I would order cuttings in the wintertime unless the place you're ordering them from is very close by. If they have to travel through a colder part of the country to get to you I would think cuttings would be more likely to be damaged quickly by cold than well rooted plants would. So my vote would be wait until springtime, but maybe someone else who has more experience with this will come along and tell you something different! As far as pot sizes, I see Lantana's being sold in 4" pots all the time at garden centers so I think those would be fine.

Lantana grows wild in Florida I'm told, here in Louisiana it is pretty cheap. Wish I would have known you were scouting, I've pulled up more Lantana than you can imagine and chunked. There is a smell to it when grown in abundance that you may or may not care for. Me, I don't care for it. Here it may die down in the winter but returns and quickly regains its size. I agree about the price being cheap. If you don't have any success with the rooting, d-mail me in the spring, I'll go buy it for you and send to you [your dime of course :) ].

Yes, Lantana camara was everywhere up in Jacksonville when I went to visit a friend. I've also noticed it in a few places in fields down here... I've got one that's rooting despite my bad care of it. It's already grown new leaves :)
Lantana camara is apparently not native here, but it's the easiest Lantana to identify (compared to less showy natives) from a block away!
