squirrels burying nuts in my new pansy bed

Fort Mill, SC(Zone 7b)

What do you all suggest I put in my hanging baskets and my planters that I just planted pansies in. I walked out of the back door and caught one digging in my planter on the deck.He must have been watching till I went inside and then pounced!!

My oldest son sent me a bunch of recipes for squirrel last month. Haha!

I usually lay flat pieces of cardboard on the exposed soil between the plants to discourage them. Good luck!

Some say the critters hate peppermint oil, and put drops of it on cotton balls and tuck those around the plants. There's a thread about this somewhere in DG. Haven't tried it myself. Might take some trimmings off what's left of my mint plat and put those around my pansies which some'body' is eating.

Sorry Blu, but I just had to laugh at your description of that pouncing squirrel. I hope that you will find something to help with the problem. It must be very frustrating.

Cut pieces of thin chicken wire and put it on top. You can cut exes for the pansies and put a little dirt on top of the wire to hold it down. The squirrels won't even try to dig through the wire.

You all should have seen me last spring rigging up my pots of water lilies so the koi and goldfish couldn't dig them out of the pots. I ran wire back and forth and crosswise umpteen times through the top of the pots (they have holes, like a basketweave, throughout the pots.) It worked. Nothing got dug out of its pot this year and when I tried to put lilies in that pond before, the fish had destroyed them in days.
