Pipe insulation question

Fountain, FL(Zone 8a)

Beer thirty yesterday and I'm thinking about us getting below freezing in the next few days. I know unprotected that the brugs left outside will most likely freeze. Sooo I'm thinking about the foam pipe insulation...could I use it on some of the trunks for protection?? or would it cause damage?? Naturally when the chance of below freezing is past I'd remove it rather then just leave it on. Any thoughts about this idea?? Hardware store closes at 4:00 today so I have some time to deceide. Thanks!

Wow! I think that's a great idea. I covered the trunk with blanket that I wrapped and tied with string last year. Only had one, and it was very large trunk. Top died, but where it was covered it survived and came back this spring.

That's a great idea! I think I'll get some for the trunks of some young tropical trees I have that need protection. We already had our first frost this week and I covered them with sheets and stuff, but this sounds way easier.

BTW....beer thirty......I thought we were the only ones who had that time of day lol

The foam pipe insulation will not harm your plants. I live in a zone where winters are very mild for the most part though we do have our moments when it gets NASTY cold!!

I used this stuff a few years ago to protect some of my brug trunks. It worked well with the only problem being that the trunk formed aerial roots which rooted into the foam. This didnt harm the plants in any way it just made it a tad bit harder to remove the foam come spring.

LOL....beer thirty is when I sit in the screen room that I fought tooth and nail NOT to build, but which I LOVE!!! It's what Bill does for a living. 100 degrees or 20 degrees outside thats where you'll find me at "beer thirty" be it 5:00 somewhere or whenever. :-)))

Thanks for the input...I had fun putting pipe wrap on trunks...for sure it does not take much to amuse me or make me happy! My wannaby greenhouses are blooming their little hearts out. YIPPIE!!!!

Thanks for the great idea! I did not have time to cover the brugs that I had planted inground this summer before the first hard freeze occurred a couple of days ago. 3 of them have leaves on them that look lke cooked spinach, but the stems are still okay. The others that are planted next to the southside facing front of my house received no damage and are still happily blooming. I was thinking about with what I could insulate the stems when I saw your post.
