End of season Brug neglect!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I am a casual Brug grower and love them. I do not stew over them but let nature runs its' course. I have three, names unknown. A yellow, a pink and a white. All in large pots so I can move them where they need to be and keep watered in our heat and sweltering humidity. For what I am about to post, I will probably be brugged out but here goes...

I had stuffed the white one into the plant shelter as it is smaller and was full of buds but hadn't bloomed for me much this summer.
I ran out of room to shelter them all. Because the pink and the yellow were still blooming, I hated to cut them back so covered them with sheets when we had a frost. The next day, was not a pretty site...

Last night we saw more temps in the high 20's. When I opened the plant shelter this morning, I was excited to find....

I'd like to see more of your "plant shelter". Is that cattle guard fencing and greenhouse plastic?
Did you make that, and is it heated?

It is always a joy to see a brug. blooming this time of year. I have always loved the white one's and hope to have a few growing in my garden this summer. Mine are all put away for the winter, and I am already working towards Spring.

Jerodsmom, I love the white and have always found the one I have to be a bit more tempermental. The fragrance was delightful when I opened the shelter. So many blooms had opened at once. What a treat!

Yes,,,, let's see the plan on that greenhouse. I/we built a temporary one this year using the more pliable cattle fencing. yours looks a little more "finished" than mine. those are some pretty white blooms. Elaine

Well, I tried to send this once and lost it... slow dial up tonight.
Thanks for asking, I am always glad to share.
Yes, seedpicker, you nailed it. Homemade with cattle panels and plastic. This link will show you a little more. http://davesgarden.com/journal/edit/viewentry.php?rid=115015

I am proud of it and glad for it until I get a grown up one... I even left some of the heat loving plants in it this summer with success.

Hi Mary ~ It is a Stapelia ~ this one is a S. gigantea. I agree, it is cool and one of my favorites. I am going to give you another link to click on but BEWARE, it could start another plant addiction! : ))) pod Check out this link: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/671749/

Cool flower! And, great job on the shelter. Very cost effective. I've even seen large scale versions of that, at a professional growers farm.

Great idea for a greenhouse. I love the Stapelia picture, too.

Yes, the plant shelter was pretty inexpensive. I do wish that the plastic would last in this climate because it takes an effort to redo it. I am going to get some shade cloth this summer and see if it will help. The double wrap could easily have bubble wrap on the inside layer too but we generally don't get that cold for that long...
The other wish I have was that it would have been deeper. I hang plants on both sides, stack them on the ground and on the top shelf, I have U shaped shelving to hold more pots or trays of plants. The alley in the middle is great for the larger potted plants like Hibiscus, Brugs, etc because of the height. It just doesn't hold many when it is only 5 feet deep.

This photo was supposed to have posted with the first post but didn't go through. It's why I figured the Brug police would come after me...

If the shelter had been deeper, these guys would have fit too....

That is so sad to see... they look like my cannas now. I think I would have taken them in the house before I let them freeze like that... as if I have a place left in the house. LOL

Hi Tammie, I really should have taken cuttings or at least cut them back but hated to while they were having one last flush of blooms. The white one hadn't opened so I chose to save that one and the others will be fine. I need to pot them up but can hardly drag the pots around now!
This was the white one before the frost... Hard not to save it.
