Hi
Last spring in this area, March and April were very, very warm, and May was very, very cold. Consequently, although spring bulbs did great, summer bulbs in my area did not. Everyone had poor performance from glads, cannas, crocosmia, etc. They all started putting up leaves, got cold, and then continued to produce their green foliage but without any blooms. I let the foliage die down the normal way at the end of summer. But does anyone know if these bulbs are now permanently screwed up?!! Should I put in new ones next spring? I'm trying to decide on my gardening plan and I don't know if I'll have to replace all those bulbs. HELP.
Thanks!
summer bulbs didn't bloom
I would give them another year. so hard to be patient!
Don't know about yours, but my Crocosmia hardly bloomed at all this year due to being overcrowded. They usually get nipped by frosts, but that has never affected blooming.
All the flowers you mention need a good deal of sun and some of those that didn't bloom may be getting too shaded out. That might be the cause in some cases but not across the board for all those in your area that had problems.
Our weather was a bit like yours too, all turned around, but once it got warm, everything grew normally.
I agree with Vossner. Be patient. Ours down this way struggled with alot of probems too and flowering was very poor and it was because of the intense heat and drought that we had over the summer. Think you had some of that too. We went 22 weeks here with no rain. Every plant and tree was stressed to the max and then some. Even with watering the ground would dry up as fast as the water hit it and bulbs are further down in the ground and with minimal water and the heat, most water didn't make it alll he way to supply the bulbs with the water and nutrients they needed to produce foliage let alone a bloom. The plants kind a put themselves in a semi dormant stage to save themselves and their strength.
Hopefully next year we will have some decent weather and some good rain showers.
