A good week

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3a)

Well, it has started for me. In the past 2 weeks I have recieved catalogues from Veseys,T&T,Stokes and Horticlub. I love taking them to bed at night -examine them cover to cover, compare prices and such. Time to snuggle in for a long winter, Cheers All, hope your doing them same. Joelle

So far I have Dominion and Stokes. The ones I'm really waiting for make me wait until January/February! But that's okay - like you I'll examine them cover to cover, over and over, comparing prices and dreaming happily away :-)

William Dam says they mailed their catalogue on Wednesday. It's my favourite.

I usually get one from Lindenberg, OSC, Southern Exposure, Agrestal, and Gardens North. Vesey's and Stokes have already arrived. I wonder if Patrick Studio is still doing a print catalogue. I think they got out of the retail seed business. So many seed houses have such excellent web sites now, I wonder why they still do catalogues. Solana Seeds in Quebec only has an online catalogue, with excellent prices, and the English descriptions have really improved. And hardyplants.com is online only.

For prices, I think the online vendors are better. But it's still good to support the smaller, local, established seed houses. And curling up with catalogues and cup of hot cocoa is so much more fun than staring at a cold computer screen . . .

I love this time of year. Thanks for reminding me on some of these. I will make sure I get a William Dam if they don't send it automatically this year. Most of the others are here already. Now to keep my wish list organized.

I always look forward to Gardens North catalogue. They're based not far from here and I've seen their lovely gardens with so many unusual perennials grown from seed. Very cool, with a stream running through it and I remember a domed structure, only about 4' high, made from supple twigs or saplings obviously made as a support for vines. I remember thinking it was a brilliant idea and thought I'd do something similar in my own garden, then go back later in the summer to see what vines she grew on the structure. Haven't done either yet!

As for Patrick Studio, both ViolaAnn and I placed plant orders for pick up in Ottawa, at the Rare and Unusual Plant Sale where they were vendors this spring. It was very chaotic between people picking up orders and the plant sale customers. Anyway, she had said to me that day that they will no longer be in the retail business at all next year, strictly wholesale. It's possible that she change her mind between now and then, and maybe she just meant the plant material not the online retail seed operation.

OK, well I just went to Garden Watchdog and that tells the tale as of October, 2006 - closed. http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/1761/

Thanks for the mention of a few catalogues I'd never even heard of. I'm off to check them out!
