I was just ordering my short day sampler from Dixondale Onion Farm and as I was browsing their site I found they are advertising an organic weed control pre emergent herbicide. I'm thinking it must be corn gluten. I'm pretty sure you order from them so I thought I would ask your opinion on this. I'm going to ask them too, but I was looking for an independent answer. They don't offer any details on the content of the product.
Thanks.
Onion question fo Horseshoe, or anyone else
I just placed my long day onion, leek and fertilizer order from them today too. It will be my first time growing onions, so I'll be glad to hear whatever answers you get roseone33. :)
Howdy Folks. And yes, I've ordered from Dixondale quite a few years now. Love those folks, too!
The product "Weed and Feed" is corn gluten and considered "organic". For my use it's a bit too expensive (from Dixondale)though. (I'm glad to see them offering it though for those who don't want to use the harsher herbicides and/or pre-emergents.) Corn gluten stops the germination of certain weeds/grasses but not all of them so you might want to read their list of just what it controls or doesn't control. If you're fighting weeds that are not affected by corn gluten you'll be losing the battle-of-the-weeds plus losing some of your hard-earned money.
Also, should you want to try corn gluten I believe you can find it at a much cheaper price and in more bulk. Try your local feed and seed store...I think they used to (or maybe still do) add corn gluten to cattle food.
As for the "feed" part of Weed and Feed, corn gluten doesn't really contain large amounts of NPK. From reading/learning about it over the past couple of years it seems to range from as little as 2-0-0 to as much as 10-0-0. With an offering of ten percent Nitrogen that might help your onions get off to a good start of topgrowth but it'll do nothing for bulb size. You'll need to offer phosphorus and most definitely potassium to increase bulb size.
Hope this is helpful. Happy onion growing!

Thanks Shoe, that's just what I wanted to know.
You're welcome anytime.
Hope you'll check in and let us know how your onion crops do. I've always had great products and service from Dixondale so I feel you'll be happy with your order.
lafko, wishing you the best with your first onion garden! Yummy, onions! Ya gotta love 'em!

I had very good luck with Dixondale onions last year; I bought the short day sampler. They did well but I ate and gave away so many as they were growing I wished I had more. This time I ordered 3 bundles so I just have to find a place for them.
Oh boy! Fresh onions for salads! Green/table onions for munching! "Fried/simmered" green onion tops (one of my favorites.) Stir-fried onions, w/garlic, etc.
Like I said, "Yummy!"
