Duskyblue Groundstreak in the grip of a spider

Edinburg, TX

Was out butterflying today at our local NABA Park and saw this poor little butterfly in the grip of a spider.

Poor thing. That's a neat looking spider tho. It looks just like the drawings of ones in a book my son has. Actually, I guess that means the drawings look just like the spider.

That actually looks worse than the anole that got one of my GF last month. Cyle of life. Sad to see it happen.

Yes, I always hate seeing a butterfly in the jaws of praying mantis, assassin bug, spider or other predator...and my first reaction is to knock the butterfly away...but that just means the predator will lose its prey and will be in search of a new one...so I just leave it alone.

Oh how I hate seeing something like this but as you say it is natures way. Great pics

Reminds me of that old movie "The Fly". At the end a spider gets the fly with the human head, it yells "Help me, help me!!!" Anyone remember that movie?

LOL Crystal! Yes, that was a creepy movie! Even the old original one I remember as a child. That movie and the "Birds" movie gave me nightmares as a child! LOL

I thought it was a fly with a human head...that looks like a spider??? No wings? Either way, that was a great movie...gotta love spooky ol' Vincent Price!!! ...and if ya'll want to see flocks of creepy birds...come down here! We get grackles that line up on the telephone wires at street intersections...noisy and sometimes freaky in numbers. Then there's another black bird with an orange spot on it's wing that does the same...or they gather in trees and call out with an eerie sounds....brrrrr!!! I just gave myself goosebumps thinking about them!!!

Cat,
You are totally right, that pictures doesn't look right at all. Maybe it is supposed to be the spider eating the fly, like in the last scene of the movie. I'll go back and look and see if I can't fine the fly with the spider head, I did see a pic of the human with the fly head. LOL.

Oh, and I do remember the Birds movie. The chase down the street gave me the creeps.

Remember, The Bad Seed movie, with that horrid little girl? Another creepy one.

Here's a photo of a Banded Argiope. This little darlin' was the size of my pinky nail when I first noticed it. There is a huge patch of waltheria indica growing in a corner back at the ranch. I was photographing Mallow Scrub Hairstreaks and my sister-in-law was sitting in the truck scanning the area with the binoculars. She screams because in the binoculars it looks huge :o)

We've gone back to the ranch for the past three weekends and it has sure grown!!! Considering there were hundreds and hundreds of Mallow Scrub Hairstreaks, Snouts, Emperors and other butterflies frequenting the waltheria indica...it selected a superb dining location to spin it's web.

This is a photo from last weekend...you can see how big it's gotten...and when my S-I-L saw it this time in the binoculars she really freaked out!!! She wouldn't get off the truck and kept screaming for me to get back in before it bit me :o) Heh! Heh!

It's about 1.25" in body length now...the legs make it seem at least four inches in length :o) EEEEEEEEEKKK!!!
