I have a female sego next to a male that has a lot of "eggs" every year. Some root after sitting on the ground awhile and I transplant these into pots that I give away and some I plant around my yard. My question is how do I propagate these seeds in order to get a better productivity?
Sego Palm
RQ, you might want to post your Sago Palm ? in the propagation forum for more exposure and quicker answer.
When the female opens up her feathery "ball" in the middle, and the male's pinecone member has pollen in it, break off the pinecone and sprinkle it onto the female's ball which will stay open for 3-4 days. Keep shaking the male pollen into the feathery ball. Then she'll start to close up. This should happen around late fall. She'll start producing red seed around April or so. Pull them off and drop them into a bucket of water. The one's that float/don't float (I truly can't remember which is which) are the ones you want to keep. DRY the seeds out for about 3-5 days. Then plant them ON THEIR SIDES! A common mistake is to plant Sago Palms (which are not really palms at all) straight up and down like other seeds. They don't grow this way.
