I'm a bulb novice and have a vegetable drawer full of daffodil bulbs from Park Seeds. (They sent me a huge net bag of them with four or so different orders.) It froze here the other night, which is unusual but not unheard of. Suddenly the iris bulbs are peeking out of the soil, having been faked into believing it's spring, I guess. What I'm wondering is, should I go ahead and plant the daffs or wait until February? If it's freezing for a night or two and then we're in Tshirts at Christmas, I'm afraid they won't do well when it really comes time.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
really basic bulb question
brigid,
I know you're much farther south than I am, but I would definitely NOT wait until February to plant your daffodils...I would plant no later than late December to ensure you give them time to root while the soil is cool. If you wait until it's almost spring to plant, the temps will be too warm for them to develop well and you will probably not get a good show.
BTW it is normal down here, including in my area, for Iris bulbs to send up leaves. Don't worry about them; they should be fine.
the bulb man hath spoken. hiya Steve
Plant them up until the point your shovel breaks on the frozen earth.
frozen earth... I've heard that happens... here, I've barely seen frozen water!
Thanks for the advice, Steve! I'll get them into the ground in the next couple of weeks. I'd rather be out there digging than inside, anyway. I'm planning a swath that will make people stop and drool. The St. Augustine the builders put in will make it a struggle, but I'm up to it.
