Snow!

Pasco, WA(Zone 6b)

Hi Guys!
Wow, is snowed here this morning! Was very surprised as we hadn't paid much attention to the forecast.

We're getting it too!!

A bit of a surprise. I can't remember it snowing in November for a long time.

Here's the neighbours banana - they never protect it.

We're supposed to be getting the white stuff sometime later tonight. I love to see the snow! Not only does it hide a lot of man-made ugliness, but it is great insulation on top of my already mulched root crops. Let it snow, let it snow!

Ridgefield, WA

Puff out your collective cheeks and blow some of it South! I so want it to snow here too ... :)

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

I like the snow, but the electricity is out again! Not a problem in the house, but we don't have emergency power run to the greenhouse or the shed where our big freezer is yet. Interesting set of problems: no electricity = too cold in one room & too warm in another.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Wow, you guys have snow already???
Cool.
We are to get some maybe on Tues.?
Will be interesting to see if we do here in Oregon.
Quite a banana tree and it survives the NW? Wow.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

Yes, it's a Musa basjoo (Japanese Fibre Banana) and typically should be wrapped for winter but this one seems to get by without it in the downtown area.

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Growin, what would you wrap a banana tree in? Burlap? I am always impressed when I see palms and more 'tropical' plants growing here in the NW.

I for left work at 8 a.m. with 1/2" of snow and returned to 3/4 inch, still falling lightly now. It's cold here: uphill from Seattle and of course the worst snow/roads of the 24 mile commute is the last 1/4 mile all uphill to home. Still a breeze, just slushy and not icy at all. I am looking forward to some accumulation and playing in the white stuff with the dog! I hope for the accumulation anyway. I grew up in Minnesota and miss a good snowfall- so quiet and peaceful.

Stay warm Weazelle! I hope they get your power back to save your shed and freezer contents.

Daisyruffles, you will get your chance at snow, if the cold weather drops low enough to get to Albany. Brrrr: down to the 20's in the next couple nights here. (Beats -75 windchill!) They are getting hammered with snow north of us: up to 15 inches is the most I've heard in WA, Whatcom Co, I think. I 90 eastbound is chains only from North Bend over the pass, last I heard.

Hope everyone stays cozy and safe!

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Annie, I know. I just talked to my mom up in Bellingham! She says it has been snowing all day long! Is like 26-28 degrees. The snowflakes are tiny tho. But she says it is like up to 7" of snow (but she doesn't know for sure so you 15" could be more right). Everything is to a standstill, I guess there.

Hope you do get to play with the dogs. Throw a snowball from me for them, LOL

Yep, winter is here!

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Daisy lol we have fifteen inches and lots of drifting lol guesss whose D's are in the ground? E

Shelton, WA(Zone 8a)

Fortunately the power was only out for a couple of hours so everything seems to be safe. :-)

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

Growin, I've been storing my Musa's in wood chips in packing crates. I just dig them up and cut off the leaves then put them in the crates and pour the wood chips over them until they are covered. it works great. Jim

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

Jim, isn't that alot of work when ya can just leave them in the ground like this with a bit of protection?

So. Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8b)

No power loss here. I've been having a ball watching Jolly (9 mos old boxer) enjoy his first snow fall. Now it feels like Christmas to me! I'm trying to catch up on my Email and forums. My hard drive crashed and I've been without a computer for a week. Major withdrawal going on here for awhile!

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

growin, everytime I leave them in the ground I loose the stalk, they sprout from the ground but then I only have a 5 to 6' stalk at the end of summer. I did wrap them one year but the stalk rotted. so now I store them in my unheated garage until early spring. they don't have that much of a root system to speak of. I can put 3 or 4 plants in 1 tall 1 1/2' square 6' tall box. I think I had Jap. Maples shipped in them. 3 did stick out the top so I added a box on top. but it isn't that much work. Jim

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

I felt kind of cheated until just the past hour- we only had an inch or so overnight but now snow is falling at a nicely moderate pace. Great for dogs, great for holiday spirit, great for a cozy fire and staying home.

Katymac, Jolly looks like he's having a wonderful time. Handsome guy!

Sultan, WA(Zone 8a)

What fun! All this new snow provided a great backdrop for our family pictures this year.

My brohter-in-law called to tell us he was stuck on a a highway 405 onramp. He couldn't get up the slope and now his battery was dead. While he was on the phone, he yelled that a gas truck that had passed him on the shoulder had jackknifed was now sliding down the onramp towards him. Then he hung up. Apparently he shoved his car out of the way in time, but he had to WALK home that night.

We have 6 inches here right now and its beautiful!!

Here is my daughter this morning. She doesn't know what to think of all this white stuff. I think it scares her a little bit.

Wonderful family photos renwings! Get that doll some mittens and she'll like the snow a lot better.

Here's my family photo for the day: had a great brisk walk in the chilly wilderness.

Well, it's supposed to be 9 degrees here tonight. It says it's 11 right now with the wind chill. Ughhh!!! Our snow has all disappeared but it is very, very cold! I drive school bus and my fingers were stinging by the time I got my bus pretripped this morning!!! And I was wearing gloves! And it takes a while for the bus to warm up too. Gonna be soooo cold in the morning. But I remember a couple years ago or so when it was -18 degrees. Busses wouldn't start and the once they got started, the fuel was jelling (sp?) up and the busses wouldn't run. We were stranded all over town! Long story..... They should have cancelled school. Can you imagine all those kids outside in -18 degree weather waiting for busses that never come?

KatyMac,
Your puppy is adorable!

renwings, Those are really cool pictures! And the one of your daughter is adorable!

Stay warm everybody!!!!

Poochella,
Your furry friend is very pretty and it's a neat picture!

Brace up, folks! Another Pacific storm is supposed to hit the inland Northwest tonight and continue on into Thursday. It will bring nasty precipitation in the form of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Good thing I don't have to go anywhere and can concentrate on keeping my greenhouse and home warm. Northern counties here in WA. are in the single digits and even a few places below zero this morning. We're not even officially into winter yet...what does this portend?

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Lettuceman, we've been wondering the same thing - and worrying a bit about it I might add!!! We were without power for 36 hours and it was 17 degrees last night. We've got it back now, thank goodness!

Ren, your children are beautiful!!!!!!! And thank goodness your brother-in-law was okay - how terrifying to see something that big coming at you.

Poochella, love your doggie, too!

Everyone stay safe.

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Lettuceman, it portends a slight delay in the previously predicted El Nino 'milder, dryer' winter. Maybe winter will be nice, but Autumn is leaving a lot to be desired.

I have had my 3 days snug at home with electricity- glad yours is back Murmur, but tomorrow I have to drive to Seattle bright and early. I am hoping for a Pineapple Express instead of ice to move in overnight- Dreamer!! Give me another foot of rain, I don't care. Much preferred to this frozen mess.

The traffic snafus of Monday evening looked just horrible. I'm glad there weren't more accidents although plenty of people put in a miserable lot of hours trying to get home safely. I work for a home care agency and it's been sheer misery trying to get staff to patients throughout King County these past few days. Tomorrow will be my turn to venture forth, so pray for rain and balmy 40 degree temps, please.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Fingers crossed, Poochella! Be careful.

It is supposed to warm up and rain, but I'm afraid not until tomorrow afternoon. It is warmer now, though, here on Whidbey than it has been in quite a few days. It's about 36 and the icicles are starting to melt!

Pasco, WA(Zone 6b)

Well, here we go. We're getting freezing rain right now. Supposed to be a mix of snow and sleet an inch thick. It ought to be an interesting day on the school bus today! Getting ready to go to work now. You all have a great day!
Sherry

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Melting! Melting! Here in the foothills we had rain much of the night and Seattle got the snowfall. I never thought I'd be glad to welcome the rain back, but I surely am.

Sherry, good luck and be careful on your bus run. You'd think they'd cancel school wouldn't you?

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

My mother, who recently moved to the Northwest from Chicago, is amazed at how people here cannot function with just a few inches of snow and don't know how to drive in it. I had to explain that where she came from it is FLAT, no hills to be seen for miles around, and the helpful snowplows and sand trucks roll out into all but the side streets there all through the night there in the well prepared midwest.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

I am adding this PIC to your Thread.
Because I am jealous of your Snow.
It has never snowed on the Gold Coast.

OOps this is Sherrygirl`s thread.
Dont mind a sip of sherry myself. lol
I hope my PIC cheers some one up anyways.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

It does cheer me up. I'm very envious. When your fingers are red and you lose the feeling in the tips, it's cold.

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Lovely photo, ginger - must be a gorgeous part of the world!

So. Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8b)

You're right growin. In the Sierras often the first notice I had that it had snowed in the night was waking up to the snowplow scraping past my house! I'm not sure Mason County has even one showplow, certainly not where I live! I used to scramble out of the house in my robe to try to keep the guy from dumping a three foot berm acrose my driveway. I bribed the guys with hot cocoa often. LOL

Ridgefield, WA

Well, it must have been either the hot cocoa or the robe that convinced them. :)

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Hot cocoa & fresh nutbread works wonders for getting your power back on quickly!
Sammamish has a snowplow & de-icing equipment, but, no one bothered to use them.
Makes you wonder...

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

KatyMac, I didn't know you could get them to not leave snow in your driveway. I have spent a lot of time digging at the berms myself, so I could drive my car out, while the rest of my driveway was clear. Jim

So. Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8b)

Well Jim, it's just as easy for them to push the pile past your driveway as leave it I think. I know they're trying to get as much done as quickly as possible so maybe seeing I'm an older single woman they didn't want to be responsible for a heart attack. LOL But the hot drinks occasionally sure didn't hurt either. I have four wheel drive and I would park close to the street so I could get to work with little or no shoveling.
