Rescued kitty

Pontotoc, MS(Zone 7b)

I got a call from my sister a month ago asking if I wanted to rescue a "kitty". She said it was a full Persian ( NOT ! ) and needed a home immediately. The owner was an elder man with cancer. When he became too ill to care for her anymore he gave her to his sister. She tried to give him a good home inside with her male cat and little doggie. Turns out her male cat constantly attacked her. Every time she made a move he would jump on her and viciously attack. The poor cat had to stay hidden to get any peace. I finally agreed to take the cat, but told the woman that I,too, had male cats and didn't know how they would respond to her.

Turns out, after a month of being here, my cats don't get along with her either. I have kept her indoors (they are outdoor cats) for her own protection. I have 3 dogs inside much of the time. At first that wasn't going well either, but she has pretty much accepted them now as long as they don't bother her. I am going to have to get her outdoors soon. My DH cannot stand the smell of the litter box although I try to keep it cleaned out. He also does not want her jumping up on the kitchen counters or on the shelves with my collections of glasswear. ( She WAS and outdoor cat originally.)

I found out she is 5 years old. Do you think it would be safe to put her outdoors at this point? Would she possibly run off and not come back? How to you "train" an older cat to know this is home now???? She is the most beautiful cat I have ever had and would hate for something to happen to her.
Here is my "Misty" :
