I am amazed!!!!

I am fairly new with DG but was with GW for years. When I first joined DG I frequented hosta because I have over 300 varieties and also water garden because I have 2 koi ponds. I added Brugmansia as my 3rd frequently visited forum and I am fascinated with the different varieties. I own several plants but lost some tags and very surprised how many varieties there are. Can someone tell me how many varieties there are??I also had ordered 6 different varieties on ebay and can not wait when they start blooming next summer. Are all the different varieties in this forum patented? I am just curious!!! Thank you, Bellie

Hi Bellie. There are so many cultivars, with more each day. Every seed pod can have 20 to 100 seeds or even more inside. Each seed will produce a new and different cultivar if the grower chose to grow them out and name them all. Very few are actually registered.

I only know of 2 that are patented. Miner's Claim and Snowbanks.

There are six species of Brugmansia which include versicolor, vulcanicola, sanguinea, suaveolens, arborea, and aurea. Then recognized crosses are x candida, x insignis, and x flava. Though there are so many crosses now it is impossible to differentiate them. So many are mixed crossed to mixed then their seedlings crossed again to mixed on and on and they all go under the umbrella of multihybrids.

I would love to see photos of your koi ponds.

And PS WELCOME TO DAVE'S! I think you will love it here. Everyone is so nice and helpful. I learn something new everyday here. You also will find your interests broaden by quite a bit. I am still the same plant pig but now I spread it over a much wider base of plants. I am so needy. LOL

Sangs and arboreas will self pollinate so they can come true to themselves by seed. But you can also cross them too to each other and also to x flavas. This is a separate genetic pool onto itself and will not mix with the other specie brugs or their hybrids. I think I read of one crossover but I do not think it survived.

The other brugs will not self pollinate so you must or nature must, introduce pollen from another cultivar of brug to get seeds. But the combinations now are endless.

Unlike the sang/arborea/x flava group, to grow another plant that is true to a mother plant, you must take cuttings.

Oddly enough, the 2 that have gone to the expense to be patented have both been reported to be difficult brugs to grow well.

What makes growing brugs such fun for lots of us, we can do home hybridizing and because they can go from pollination to flower in 2 seasons, it makes it such fun. You can also then name your seedling whatever you want and even register it for free. Also there are so many beautiful brugs, so you can easily get decent flowers on your own hybrids if you pick the parents well and even if you do not, few brug blooms are truly ugly. To start, I would just cross whatever you have in your yard and practice on them as you learn more and gather other brugs.

LOL, this is probably more than you ever wanted to know!

Here is a double just opening that I have been waiting to bloom. I am hoping the pollen will be ripe today. I will spead it on a few brugs that are single and tend to have PINK up the corolla with doubles as parents. I am hoping this will make more double babies. But I do not know that yet. But I will learn. And I am hoping. LOL

Wow Kell!! The brug is gorgeous and you are very well versed with brugs. You must have been growing them for a long time. A lot of my brugs had been trimmed down and I have several cuttings in the garage. I still have few plants that has lots of buds. What puzzles me is anyone can name a brug and does not need to register. I think i am not making sense. How about space?. My brugs gets awfully big and I am running out of space 'cause of my hosta collection. As far as my 2 koi ponds I had posted pictures when i first joined. I can email you the pictures if you can give me your email address. My big pond was designed by a pond designer, very happy with the result and the 2nd pond is a big preformed. I have over 100 kois which is too many for my pond.Right now they are in hibernation. Thank you for the lesson on brugs. Bellie

Hi Bellie,

Being a patented Brugmanisa and a registered Brugmansia are two different things.

If it's patented you can't reproduce from cuttings, except for your own use, without paying a license fee.

International Cultivar Registration Authority registers the name of Brugs and also collect information about the cultivars. I think a lot of people didn't bother to register their hybrids before, but perhaps they will now as the process is being well explained in a few different sites. Whether a hybrid is worthy of being reproduced is a topic that could cause a lot of "heated" discussion, so I'm not getting into it.

Bellie, you will be too if you hang around here long enough. It takes a while but after seeing so many you start to pick out the different characteristics. Also you begin to favor certain ones.

Thanks Patricia. I still have so many blooms though finally this bad weather may get to them all.

mpabbott,
Thank you for your response.I bought few varieties on ebay and there are a lot of varieties on sale. Are those varieties legitimate or the hobbyist naming them? Thank you, Bellie

PS
I had forgotten to mention I did look back and enjoyed your pond so much, Bellie.

I saw all the pictures. I love going to nurseries that have them!

You know I bet your hostas would love to grow under brugs that are trained as standards.

Yikes - it's hard to say Bellie. Some name theirs the first year, and sell without any trialing or proving that it's consistent. There are some that get cuttings and propagate, selling before they've seen it bloom themselves .... which can multiply mistakes. Many sellers on eBay are good and trustworthy. I would go with sellers that have been recommended by others here. Check the Garden Watchdog here on Daves. It's a good resource.

I just ordered 8 more varieties but no luck on doubles yet.I have to make sure that I do not misplace the tags.

Did you like my pond? When you get a chance view the hosta collections. Bellie
