Arlington, TX

Hi all
Brent & Becky's bulbs are now on sale, 25% off

I called them and asked if they'd lower the prices after T/giving and the answer is yes. The risk, however, is that they'll have that much less inventory by then.

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Awesome!!! I just ordered Blossom Peacock and Dancing Queen. Yippeee!!!!!

Cynthia, I have been wanting BP for SO long now! I was just waiting for them to go on sale on BnB's. I added another cuz it just didnt' seem right to order only one. And, who can resist Dancing Queen, after the old Abba song? LOL Anyway, I'm praying that they do not have red blotch. Are you ordering any from them?:)

GH

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My B&B amaryllis bulbs last year were wonderful -- large and firm, not a speck of red blotch to be seen.

:-)

Arlington, TX

I had the same experiences as Critter. I've ordered amaryllis from them twice and they were lovely!

vossner, OOPS, Now I read your comment telling me about the after T-day bigger discounts from B&B!!! My DH said when I woke up this morning, " I see you had a nice LONG chat with Becky last night" . It took me a second to realize he had received the email order confirmation from B&B. Yesterday, he finally hit a rock (not a native, but a buried one from a walkway we built) and broke his auger bit while planting the penultimate bag of bulbs. We already had planted about 2000 bulbs with it this fall, so I think we got our 15.00 buck worth. I will order a bigger auger for him today, just in case I order more bulbs. Last year we planted maybe 200. We went bulb wild this year. Patti

WOWZA, I'd say "bulb wild" might not cover it! Oh, imagine how many more bulbs I could plant with DH helping.... ! I did get a bulb auger, but haven't used it much... it's not good on getting through our soil unless I'm in a tilled bed, and in a bed it's just as easy to use my favorite hand digger tool, especially for smaller bulbs. Hmmm, perhaps I'll get it out for adding those daffs to the daff & DL bed!

Arlington, TX

Wowza is right! We have 2500 tulips waiting in the fridge. DH helps me plant as long as he can use the bulb auger. There's something about men and power tools!

critterologist, When working alone. even if you just drill the holes with the auger in the tilled beds, then go back and fill them up and cover, it seems to take a fraction of the time it takes me when doing it alone with my hand trowel. I also find that if I drill for the bigger bulbs first in an area and then fill the holes with the bulbs and then go back and drill between the bigger bulb holes to accommodate the smaller bulbs, it goes really quickly, as you can see all the spots that are open and don't ever dig up anything that has just been planted. I then top rake the whole area and tamp the soil down well. I can also easily see the drifts that I am trying to achieve. Now time will tell if my method really works in practice. loveshercowdog, my over exuberance is partly your fault as I could never imagine planting so many bulbs until I saw that you did this and that you and your marriage survived. So I just went bulb wild. Thanks! I agree that by handing my DH the auger bit attached to his electric drill instantly turned him into a "planting fool". After we were done, he even mixed up his special concoction of caster oil and water to spray everywhere we planted. He has our druggist order him bottles of it as it is way cheaper than buying commercial mole retardant. He has become very paternal. I entered all the bulbs with pictures in my garden journal by beds, so he can see what is suppose to come up and where and photo record the garden in the spring. Can't wait! Patti

That brings up a good point. How is everyone identifying what you planted where? I planted some tulips and daffs near the fence, and I was going to make up plant markers later, but then I forgot to, and now I have only a vague recollection of what I planted there. I think it might have been Spring Pride and Pink Fountain, but I'm not entirely sure.

But that's the only time that happened. Many of the irises already had markers, which I simply left on. For all the rest, I used plain wooden markers and a fine-point sharpie. I have this little forest of wooden sticks in my yard right now, but the plants will hide them when they grow.

Some of the crocuses are going to be spring surprises. I planted them in and over the daffs and tulips, but I planted a variety and didn't mark what they were. A couple packages were simply marked "Varied" -- the ones I got from Home Depot. At that point in late winter/early spring, I'm sure I'll be thrilled to see anything green pop up out of the soil, never mind what kind of crocus it is.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I don't use markers, with a few exceptions (new iris and DL) as they look terrible in my winter landscape view and my dogs think they are fun to pull out and romp about with, so they get mixed up anyway. I do, however log the general location of each plant by which bed it is planted in and often with a note as to where it is in relationship to an easy landmark (shrub, rock, gate, big mass of known plant, etc.) within the particular bed by using DG Journal program. I take lots of pictures and refer back to them when I am planting. Not perfect but I have a pretty good idea of who is where, my biggest problem is that I had hand written journals of my garden going back to 1983 which were destroyed by a flooded house a few years ago, so I am still trying to figure out the names of some older plantings in my garden. The id forum has been helpful, but I have many to ask about this winter from pictures I took this summer. No perfect solution, but that sort of makes the garden a little more magical when something appears unexpectedly and is unknown. For those that need an Id, I am painting with camouflage colors wooden markers this winter to use as discreetly as I can, 8" birch that I can bury behind the plant. Patti

Does anyone know if when after T'giving they will lower prices, and by how much?

lizren-
The way I remember it is that they lower the price in increments over a week or two until everything is gone. I don't think I've seen it fall below 50-75% off. And usually there is little left that I want at that last day. And I've placed orders at the final sale and received packages with notes that certain items were sold out and not available.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

What is red blotch? I received 3 Amaryllises this year -- not from B&B -- and they all have reddish blotched on the outside of the bulbs.

Thanks,
Suzy

Coaling, AL(Zone 7b)

thanks andidandi -- this is my first year to watch out for bulb sales; I keep teetering between going ahead and ordering what I've listed on my "would like to have" list and just waiting it out for better prices and potluck! After a gorgeous, but long day of bulb planting today, though, I must say my enthusaism for many more has waned a little! ;-) But once I hit the website, I become an addict all over again!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

The B&B server seems to be clogged up (unresponsive) just after midnight... I'm wondering if the sale price has dropped to 50% off, or if it's just that lots of other people are also logging on just after midnight to check the status of their sale!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I'm having the same problem with their site, and it's driving me crazy thinking someone else might get MY cheap bulbs, lol. 50% off sales are such a joy at this time of year; not only because of the focus on spring, but it always makes my try things I would'nt have otherwise.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

The discount did go to 50% for wholesalers several days ago. The offerings are getting slim!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Well, darn, that's not good news for retail customers.... However, assuming they're keeping up pretty well with updates, they still have a couple of things that I'd like to get! LOL

The site is back up now, but still at 25% discount. I'll keep checking!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I tried getting on all this afternoon, unsuccessfully

Arlington, TX

I just checked

50% is ON!

Woohooooo!

I logged on at 12:05 am. I'd scoped out my choices pretty well already, and I'd been keeping an eye on which ones were still in stock after Thanksgiving, biding my time until the Big Sale. ;-) I didn't get anything unless I knew just where it would go, and I resisted the temptation to start planting spring bulbs in another area of the yard rather than continuing to fill in "gaps" in existing plantings. Even so, I bought 120 "big" bulbs and 270 "little" bulbs, plus 10 'Baby Star' amaryllis (I'll keep 1 or 3 and give the rest away over the holidays).

I actually did fairly well with holding out for the sale, since many of my top picks were still available. Even the 'Rip van Winkle' daffs and Anemone blanda that I bought (full price) earlier this season were still in stock -- but that's OK, I'm glad I made sure I had them for my new little island bed in front. I did get more of the 'Blue Shades' anemones but decided I didn't "need" more of the daffs.

My only last minute additions were 10 greggii tulips that caught my eye and 10 Iris reticulata 'George' (for a friend by that name). Can you believe I have the nerve to pat myself on the back tonight for my *restraint*??!? ROFL

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

well, I broke down and bought the amaryllis Pink Floyd, cheapest price anywhere, and daff Katie Heath

Arlington, TX

I was restrained, all I bought was 5 Hippaestrum, Blossom Peacock.

cynthia

Arlington, TX

OK, I have to confess,
I just called VE and learned that on their amaryllis the minimum order is $35 so I got 3 Charisma and 3 San Remo. Why not from B&B? Because VE bulbs are bigger. Well, now, I can get back to work. Confession does help.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Vossner, I ordered hippeastrum Baby star, blossom peacock, charisma, amputo, supreme garden. I then moved on to narcissus and ordered: Berlin, Goose green, Stainless, Intrigue, White medal. I then went "bulb wild" on some pink (so unlike me) tulips, China town, Eternal flame, Flaming purissima, Sorbet, Top lips, Weber's parrot, Zurel, and a white one, Swan wings. I thought I would pant them under an old crab apple. I am trying to do as Gemini_sage called "drifts, layers, and repeating elements" in my spring beds, therefore I HAD TO ordered more anemone, crocus, geranium, Scilla , muscari, hyacinths, and ornithogalum to try to achieve this effect. Oh my, another 300 plus to plant ! When the print out was received by my DH, he quietly went online and ordered another bulb auger. His broke last week. What a dear. Patti

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

cynthia, the amaryllis coop was done w/ VE, and those bulbs were enormous, you are right
Patti, lol, DH is a dear

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Patti, so cute about your hubby quietly ordering another bulb auger. That's true love! And sounds like we ordered some of the same goodies.

I've been so good, and have impatiently waited for clearance time to roll around. Just finished getting the Lowes sale bulbs in the ground (about 300, 1/2 tulips and the rest little bulbs). Now I'm expecting 550 from Brent&Becky's! Now, if the nice weather will just hold out.

I'm particularly excited about some daffs I've been wanting for quite some time, Stainless, Silent Valley, Billy Graham, Lorikeet, Sentinel, Fragrant Rose and Katie Heath, as well as several others I could'nt resist. Really looking forward to Fritillaria persica; have never seen it in person and the pics look so cool. Species tulips Little Beauty, T.sylvestris, T. bakeri 'Lilac Wonder', and T.clusiana var. chrysantha are joining my growing collection of little gems. Several other things too; can ya tell I'm excited?! LOL

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Neal I'm excited too! I attended this bulb lecture at my fave local nursery and the speaker, whom I trust, told me species tulip Lilac Wonder is a sure thang in Texas. Yes, I'm excited too.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Great! There are tulips for your zone too! Did you see the Brent&Becky's pic of Lilac Wonder planted with Iris bucharica? I'm copying that lovely combo in my shrub border. Are there other species good for your area?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

dunno. Tulips are pretty much annuals here, but to me, much too expensive an annual, so I had pretty much given up on them, until I heard Betty rant and rave about how wonderful they were for our area. I will let you know next Spring

Arlington, TX

vossner
I've had the species tulip cluisana cynthia return twice. Is lilac wonder a species?
c

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh dear, I should not be reading everyone else's lists of the goodies they ordered.... I am tempted to see if I can still add on to my order! ROFL

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

critter, did you add any more species to your garden this year?

The weather has been gorgeous, but its supposed to turn nasty, probably about the time the bulbs arrive (of course, lol). I think I'll pre-dig some holes for daffodils and tulips today; may speed things up a bit when I have bulbs in hand. Last year B&B's daffs were huge, so it should really help with those.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL... That's just why I'm second-guessing my order... surely there is a bed where I desperately need some more species tulips! I did think that the 'Lilac Wonder' tulips would be very nice in combination with miniature daffs... Neal, do you think they'd bloom together with those little yellow daffs you sent me last year? (my resolve is wavering)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Hmmm...., they sure would look pretty together, but I've never grown Lilac Wonder before so its hard to say. The blooms on Narcissus pseudonarcissus are very long lasting, as they bloom when its cool, so they could very likely put on a show together. I've never grown Iris bucharica before either, but they show them blooming together in a planting. I wonder if they could answer that for you at B&B? They have lots of experience and always seem very nice on the phone.

Is'nt that the thing with species tulips, you can always find little spots to fill in with clusters of them! I realized after ordering that I forgot to add T.marjoletti, one I've been wanting for a long time. Ah well, what's another year, lol.
