My small beginning

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Ten little leaves in a box so small
You don't look dangerous to me at all,
Ten little leaves each in a glass
You look so innocent each time I pass.
Ten little leaves, now you have roots
Glory be,now there are shoots.
Ten little leaves in ten little pots
Your shoots,little plants-oh lots.
Ten little leaves, now I must divide
To part with a tiny one,I cannot decide.
Ten little leaves,so lovely,so small
Dozens of plants not small at all.
Ten little leaves,I've caught the disease,
Heaven help me,I'm ordering more leaves.

I read this in a 1985 Gessie magazine Allison sent me.I thought you might enjoy it.

Thank you Jannich, for posting that charming and oh so true bit of poetry. So easy to stick a few leaves....but then

Try as I can
Try as I might
I have no willpower
To my delight
Ten little leaves
That started it all
Led to my african violet downfall

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Thank you Jan darling and so true :))
There is nothing like growing African violets by leaf each new life is exciting , remarkable.
They are fun to grow and share
Thanks for sharing !

Silver Spring, MD

Downfall?
I think not,
Not downfall my friend!
Ten little leaves--
Open hearts at the end.
We're giving and loving
And sharing new starts.
Ten little leaves
Ten thousand rewards!

Happy Growing everyone!

(Sing with me!)

One little, two little, three little violet leaves...
Four little, five little six little violet leaves...
Seven little, eight little, nine little violet leaves...
Ten Thousand violet plants!!!

I have been trying to get over the idea that I need to pot up every leaf baby or to keep every plantlet regardless of how well it's growing... I did recently take out almost 2 flats of (duplicate) plantlets that had crown damage (from my early summer lighting issue), and I've promised myself that I won't pot up more than 3, well maybe 6, plantlets of a given variety. If I were growing only for myself, I'd just pot up the best plantlet from a leaf, maybe two plantlets so I'd have a backup, but I also do a lot of sharing and trading. However, ending up with dozenS of 'Allegro Appalachian Trail' and 'Cambridge Missy' plantlets was just absurd!

I'm singing with you Jill!
I haven't come to the point of throwing away plantlets or leaves yet.Breaks my heart.I just give them away for postage.LOL. If you need a home for one of your Allegro Appalachian Trail please save me one for a spring trade?

Nancy,Congrats on your new babies.I knew you could do it! You've got the " AV fever " now.

Nancy ! Congratulations on your new babies ! I'm so excited for you ! I love babies :))

Jannich, I did save the best looking of the plantlets, but I don't have space for two trays of sad little plantlets with dead crowns... I hate to "thin" seedlings also, even when they're "just" garden peas, but I'm getting better about steeling myself and just doing it. At one point, I had over 50 'Allegro Appalachian Trail' plantlets, many planted 3 to a pot, and I put one (or two) in every outgoing plant box!

50 wow. What a grower.I guess I would learn to throw away some.LOL.
