Help Please/New

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Hello,
I got this plant about a month ago and it said it is a Hoya well things went crazy here and now it has slowed a little .. I am off to find out what type of Hoya this is and how to grow it.. I have never had one of these, but I think it is cute with the little pink on the leaves.. When I was going back and forth to the hospital for my husband I left it out and we got frost onenight and It almost killed it...So she is in the house and recouped pretty well I think....
I hope I am doing this correct with showing this picture here... I am new to the plant but also new to Daves... I mostly have plumerias and I am new to that also but these hoyas are something very diffrent... So any help would be nice and growing instructions , also could this climb?
Thank you all,
Susan,Va

Lovely plant Susan! That's a Hoya compacta regalis. The new growth is such a stunning colour of red. Congrats on your new acquisition.

Hi Susan

Welcome, I'm a newbie too I have 2 hoyas they same kind and guess what it looks like yours. So you are the first person I could help. I hope I'm not wrong but it looks like a hoya compacta. Here is a picture of mine flowering.

That compacta is beautiful, Jeri.

Well, now you will be hooked on these too. Ha. Welcome to the club of hoya addicts here.

It will need some kind of support to climb, and you will have to fix it onto the support somehow as the sheer weight of the stems makes them dangle. However, the new growth does tend to go up for awhile until the weight takes over, so I'm sure they would climb. I like to just let mine hang down & dangle, & then I wrap it up across the top of the plant and hanger when it gets too long.
They get very pretty outside in summer in the shade with a dash of morning or late afternoon sun. I am on the wrong computer or I would post a picture of mine. Maybe later.
Don't let this one go completely dry between waterings as it likes it a bit moister than some of the other varieties. However, all hoyas like to drain quickly and be somewhat rootbound.

Marcy,
After seeing yours why would I want it to climb??? Oh thank you very much... I cant believe this place is like I have died and gone to heaven...LOL... Mine only has 3 stems so I will let it grow,grow,grow.... :-) I have not been this happy since I found plumerias... :-) I went yesterday and got some Hen and Chick at the same place as I did my Hoya... These to came as a surprise for I did not know that there were diffrent types... Well we all live and learn... My Granddaughter came over today and she saw them and my Hoya and wanted some she is 5 I told her no problem she could have the Hens and Chicks but not the hoya yet....LOL she understands... She loves to garden with me... Ok talked your ear off...LOL

I'm beginning to think that Grandmothers are made to show the joy of gardening to our little ones. Hurray for you, you are off to a good start with your granddaughter at five. You'll hook them now, they will go thought a phase of not being interested in their teens and early twenties and by the time they are thirty the seeds you are sowing now will pop it's head up and they will be gardeners also.

I too am hooked on hoya's and plumerias and just about everything else.

You grow girl.

Oh Dear - I must be an early starter being still in my twenties!!!

My Compacta is in a very small pot and when I first got it it kept falling over - soil everywhere! I had to put some stones in it in the end to stop it from falling over, and it seems to have liked the repotting (with some perlite etc of course) as it's off now, despite the cold Bristol autumn... it's started growing up too, so I guess when it grows some leaves it's going to succumb to gravity once more...

Hi Hills

Actually I was a flower child back in the 70's and I was in my twenties also. I've always loved plants. My children are a different story. They use to get plants and bring them straight to me because they knew they would kill them. My oldest daughter became a florist in her late 20's and quit in 97 and just now that she has a home is starting to be concerned with plants. My son who use to be punished to pulling weeds says he will never be a plant person.

Hi Jan

We signed up about the same time it looks like. How do you like DG so far? I just love it!!! I have been so defrived from talking to people that love plants until this year. I became a master gardener and met all kinds of nice people that love plants and it was so much fun learning the way things should be done. Then I found this forum and I think I have died and gone to heaven. Surely DG is what Heaven is like. Everyone has been so kind to me and taken the time to answer my questions, given advice and generous with cuttings and seeds.

I have a large yard and in the spring if I can give you a cutting of anything LMK.

Aaah .... Memories! The 70's hold some good, and some not so good memories. Some of the things going on in the world today remind me to send my thoughts and prayers to all in the Military and their families!

The 70's was my era also, bellbottoms, long straight hair with those huge hoop earrings, and wearing flowers in my hair! My DH and I were married the summer of 69' and he got his draft notice, so went into the military. He was in the Navy for four years. We were very fortunate that he never went to Vietnam, he was in the Mediterranean area. The first 4 years of our marriage, he was gone more than 2 years! That was hard! But, we are still married today .... 37 years!

Oh .... forgot what thread I was on! Thanks for the memories y'all!

Susan & Jeri: Welcome! I am new to DG also, joined in late September! It is a great place to meet other "plant people" and chat about our favorite plants! I have learned so much in the past couple of months! There are some really intelligent folks out here in Dave's Land! I have been interested in plants and gardening since aquiring my first house plant in 1967. Some folks have inherited their love of gardening from parents or relatives. I don't know where my interest came from as neither of my parents were into gardening at all, and none of my grandparents were either. I believe my love of plants began when my family moved to Florida. There is so much "green" and blooming in the South all year round! Now, I WON'T say that I enjoy mowing my lawn 9 or 10 months out of the year, which we have to do down here, but I guess living in the South does have some advantages and disadvantages! I have MANY house plants, but only a few Hoya's. One Hoya, a friend gave me back in the mid 70's, and, I have two others I bought just this summer. I have recently received 3 or 4 cuttings in trades from other DG'ers and really look forward to them growing, maturing and flowering! I don't have a Hoya Compacta like yours .... very pretty! I will have to look around and try to find one like that! None of the cuttings I got in trade are the rope kind and I like the looks of that rope foliage!

I know you will really enjoy this "Garden" of people here on DG and believe me, you will learn a lot about people and their plants! It's the most informative web site regarding plants that I have come across. What better way to learn than from other's with the same passion for plants!

Again, Welcome to you both ..... and "Happy Gardening"

Lin

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks Lin that was a very nice welcome... If I knew how to root a shoot of my rope hoya I would send you a piece... I really like it... It is just to pretty sitting on top of my desk as I type... :-) I cant join any swaps here in Hoya for I dont have but the one so far...
Oh the 70's what can we say?? It was fun... my hubby and I started dating in the 60's and got married in the 70's... It has been 31 years now and still going... We have 4 wonderful sons and One is in the military he is a Marine.. We were very lucky this year for he is on USA land... It almost killed me when he went over to hell two times... I thank god everyday that my son came home and wish all our sons and daughters could come home.... He was hit in a car wreck the night before TG. a 93 year old man ran a red light... he is fine and so is the other man thank god... totaled his new car and the air bags did not deploy... we are also thankful his wife was not with him for she is 5 m. preg. This is the second time Matt has had a car wreck.. first was when he did his first deployment to Iraq.. He lived threw that and on his way home was in a wreck... I cryed the whole time up to the hospital to get him and the whole way home I held him... silly I know but he is my baby boy... or at least one of them..LOL
Ok chewed your ears enough... sorry got off topic...
Hugs,
Susan

Susan: You sure have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season! Your son, Matt definitely has a guardian angel watching over him!

As for Hoya's ..... just wait till spring and all the swapping begins again! You can accumulate plants quickly! I have loads of a variegated leaf hoya that I've had the original plant from the 70's ... I will gladly send you some rooted cuttings if you d-mail me your address info!

Blessings to you and your family!

Hello Everyone,
Well today started off kinda crapy but then my grandaughter came over and we were planting fools...LOL nothing like them to make you snap out of it.... We planted Hens and Chicks 3 diffrent types... She also said again she would like my hoya... said nope not yet... she kills everything when she gets it home by watering it all the time... She will learn..... she is young yet... but we always have the best fun when we are together.... Of course we made a planter for her to take home... She told me she killed her last cactus..LOL I told her she can't keep watering it... I wish her parents would also teach her but like I said she will learn....
Lin I found another rope hoya... YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH... It has two things growing... LOL get the things... :-) So if you send me a dmail I will send you a cutting of it... please?????? it is the least I can do for you.... :-) also when you email could you tell me kinda sorta how to send this? Like do I put a paper towel around it and in a baggie? I have a little box I am going to use to send... This is the first time I will be sending a live plant in the mail...
Ok chewed all of your ears again.... Hope everyone is well and having great days....
Hugs,
Susan
