...found this morning on my H. ciliata!!! They are the size of large cooking bananas!!!!! cv. Ruthie blooming next door so who knows who the fathers may be...probably self pollinated. Yes...I plan to grow them out to see what happens!!!!
How bout them seed pods
Congratulations Carol. They are enormous. That is so cool.
Patti
Oh my gosh that is wonderful Carol, congratulations. I had no idea that was a seed pod. I'm amazed.
Jeri
Awesome! I never even thought about Hoya's havin seed pods! First photo I've ever seen. Keep us posted on the outcome when you pot them up!
I'm fairly new to Hoya's myself. I've had a Hoya 'Krimson Queen' that a friend gave me back in the 70's and always liked it okay, rooted cuttings of it many times ... but never really thought much about getting any other hoya's .... that is until I joined Dave's a month ago! Now, I have made a couple of trades and gotten some hoya cuttings in exchange! And, I bought a 'Lacunosa' and what I think is a 'Brevialata' ... am really enjoying Hoya's! I don't have the rope type hoya yet but hope to get one of that kind soon! So many different kinds and all beautiful! I never knew that some of them have fragrance too! I am quickly becoming a big fan of Hoya's!
Lin
Zoweeeeee, Carol. That is fantastic!!
Ann
Oooooohhweee
I don't know what to say... Absolutely fantastic!!
Wow Carol! Those things are huge! Good luck growing them out!
:) Kim
Carol you are having to much fun;)
holy moly are they bid seed pods or what. Let us know what the seeds look like and how many are in a pod. Do you think it will have a million seeds or a few larger seeds in a pod that size? Ofcourse let us know how it goes with the seedlings too.
Should we all start guessing how many are in there:))
Could you hang on to those tropical winds for awhile, that are coming our way . Vancouver and some cities on the Island have to boil their drinking water because the resevors are all stirred up and mucky. There is another storm that is going to hit us tomorrow. I keep looking outside to see if there is a transplanted palm tree that has blow in hehe.
Bea
Wow...congrats on those Carol.
How in the world does a tiny little stem from a peduncle hold on to such umungus things?
Marcy
Holy cow, Carol - those are AWESOME!!!
Bea, I remember the Pineapple Express phenom when I living in Seattle!!! Just so you know...that same weather brings dry weather to our side of the island...and it is created by a system way to the north of us. Maybe you will get a hoya seed on the wind!!!!
The biggest pod on a hoya relative I have seen is a Stephanotis...and I grew them out. These H. ciliata pods are twice as big. Wouldn't it be fun if it were a cross?... The vine was solid with flowers...so I expect it to be a self pollinated situation. It has made me look up into the trees a lot more!!!
Kim...your seeds dried out enough and got fluffy...so I have sewn them.... will let you know how/if they come out!!!
Carol
Ha, they do look like bananna's, very cool. And HUGE....
Carol....I'm so happy to hear that! I do hope you get some germination. These other two look like they are getting closer, figures with the holiday coming. I'm cooking for 10 people this year, and it will be my first time cooking!
:) Kim
Those seed pods are amazing! It is something how large the pods are in relation to the leaves. They do look like one of the smaller varieties of bananas. The hoya looks like it is loaded with seed pods. Are any of the pods close to the ground or are they all up high? I am curious to see what the seeds are like. Please keep us posted.
Karen
OK Carol I have my butterfly net next to the door if I see a seed I will snag it for sure:) hehe
Bea
Soon they are going to turn yellow like bananas:) I bet there are going to be a ton of seeds in there.
This may be a silly question but have you ever pollinated your Hoyas? If so how? It looks like it would be a difficult thing to do.
Bea
Bea...I leave pollination to the Gods (and the bugs!). I know that Ed Gilding walks around with the tiny needle and pollinates anything blooming...he even crossed some gingers last time he was here which I am axious to see bloom. Those seed pods are SO big...probably thousands of seeds. The biggest pod I grew was a Stephanotis...and they are about 2" tall now....50 of them. I have some H. obovata seeds I was sent that I am growing out and some lacunosa seeds of my own. Kim sent me some H. obscura seeds but they haven't germinated yet. It is fun (and space consuming) to grow them out.... I am giving a pod to a friend to grow out....and I will take one and control some growth and spread some others on mossy tree trunks and see what happens....
That is sooooo cool! How big are the seeds pods?
:) Donna
Here is what we found yesterday....and I picked it because it was raining and I wanted to keep track of it. So I took it home and put it in a Knee High stocking (which I cut up to tie plants to the trees)...where it is starting to dry out...tomorrow I will plant them.... I am afraid that if I offer any the mail will take SOSOSOOOOOO long they won't be viable....but if I can save one of the other pods when I come back I will mail some out. Send me a Dmail and give me your address...when I come back next week I will try to get them out. The seeds are the dark scale looking thingies and the white is the dandilion like fluff that takes them off into the world. Even looks like a banana peel now, doesn't it?

That is a whole lot of seeds! I'd like to try some of yours if you decide to mail some out. I'm sorry the pod I sent didn't germinate....seems like i just can't get it right mailing those out. I mailed the rest of the seeds the day they opened, but I still don't think anyone got any to germinate yet. Better luck next year maybe.
:) Kim
Wow...congrats. You are also getting very good with that camera.
I wish!!! thanks, tho, Marcy. DH took those photos with his fancydancy digital EOS....really a sexy camera!!! Not a bad husband, either!!! LOL.
That is sooo cool! It does look like a banana peel. Definitely amazing!! I would luv to try a few seeds if you thought they would make it here.
:) Donna
It really IS fascinating to see the progression of that seed pod and see all those little seeds ready to break free in such a close up view. All seed hoya pods are not that big are they? Wonder why this particular hoya gets such big ones..or is this unusual?
Is H. ciliata one of the eriostemmas group? I have it, but it has never bloomed.
Marcy
The only thing this seed pod has in common with the others is the way it is made...and it functions. My little lacunosa seed pods are about 2" long and teeny; H. australis seed pods are like string beans. I think it is because it is an eriostemma, Marcy. But I can say that with any authority because it is the first eriostemma I have seen the pods of!!!
Awesome pictures Carol.
Patti
That is so cool, Carol. It is really wonderful to be able to see the various stages of the seed development process. Maybe you should make a montage of photos and put them up on your website showing how these glorious plants develop from seed-pod to seedling to plant!
Ann
Awesome picture capturing them falling! Very cool! You know where some of your babies can go.
:) Donna
Wow!! Those are alot of babies, Carol!
Wow! I have never seen Hoya seed pods before! How long did it take those little seedlings to sprout? I would love to try growing Hoya's from seed .... that is just so cool! I hope you will keep us all up to date on these little babies! That is a neat photo of those little "parachutes" taking off .... wish they could fly to Florida!
Does anyone know if there is any seed catalog that sells Hoya seed?
Lin
Hoya seeds have to be very fresh... It took the H. ciliata seeds about 24 - 48 hours to germinate!!! I smeared some on trees, some on rocks with moss...will keep an out out for them. In the summer I should get more seed pods of H. australis...they always produce lots. I am surprised that upwind there aren't jungles of H. australis!!!
Carol
Wow Carol that is amazing I hadn't seen anything sprout that fast. Both of your hands and your feet must be green. Good growing.
Any weeds popping up yet?
None of the seeds I smeared on the trees and moss seem to have taken...at least, I can't find them. In a way it is a good thing because if hoyas suddenly started sprouting up all over this part of HI, the Ag. department might shut me down. I DO have a little H. lacunosa (from Lankawi Island) that is constantly sporting folicles and the seedlings are coming up in lots of other hoya pots!!!
