I have to vent. I went to a large nursery today to write down what's available for a road barrier planting I'm doing. I was going through about a dozen wagons of perennials but this lady was grabbing what I was writing down. I'd write part of the label on my paper and she'd grab the plant. What up with that? If she'd be any closer, she'd be standing ontop of me. I left that area because of her and went over to a table of miniature conifers and was writing the names down when this little lady almost runs over and grabs the plant I'm writing the name of. There is maybe 1 other customer (the other grabber) in the entire large outdoor nursery area. I wasn't wearing honey so what is this weird swarming all about. I really don't get people sometimes.
Swarming People at the Nursery
You must look like a gardening genius Growin. Perhaps they were so convinced you knew a hot new trend in plants and were taking names, that they couldn't wait to jump on the bandwagon. In other words, I don't know what's wrong with them or what drove their rude behavior, but it sure must have put a crimp in enjoying your trip to the nursery.
I would have run over to the chameleon plants, gout weed, invasive bamboos and squealed with delight at each plant while madly jotting down the name. That's just my dark side ;) shining through.... shame on me!

LOL. Oh, that would have been so funny. This nursery didn't have that stuff. I was reviewing the 50% off wagons. I looked closer to being a lumberjack than a genius.
Do people actually introduce Ground Elder into their gardens? Willingly? And write positive reports on it???????? I am sorry, but I am breathlessly stunned at the idea. Nurseries actually sell it? I spend hours, no days, digging this stuff out, over and over again - but what a wonderful idea to introduce it into a stinker's garden. Ohhh, Poochella, that is definately a dark dark side. Please remind me to never never ever cross you. Gardening as revenge - hmmmm, years of therapy. Excellent.
Yes, Laurie1, they do. The variegated one was actually for sale when I was reviewing the wagons to my surprise. I totally agree with you - takes forever to get rid of.
There was this aggressive native plant person who was a big activist and did everything in his power to derail any decent planting. He ruined several plantings so I threw palm seed towards his planting and "Voila!", instant palm grove.
LOL Growin. I've experienced grabbers before at our local nursery...it sure is irritating when you're reaching for a plant to buy that day, and they swoop up behind you and grab it. Sometimes I just don't understand people.
I'm much too nice to stoop to such a dark level Laurie 1, but I would be thinking about it! I also always bite my lip when I see people buying Sweet Woodruff or Lamium or heaven forbid: English Ivy as I consider them all weeds here. But to pay money for them- yikes! One has to respect that the nursery is a business and if there's a willing, uninformed customer, I guess it's buyer beware.
Growin do palm seeds really take that easily? It seems it would be a tricky plant to grow here in the NW, although I've seen some beauties around King County.
Poochella, if you go to the Locks and look under the palms there, there is tons of seedlings. All they need is a moist, organic environment - doesn't that sound like the PNW? I threw a bunch in the front yard and I'd say every one came up. Now I have palm grass everywhere.
OOh, people like this definitely bring out my dark side. They are so competitive over nothing - although I always say that in the PNW, gardening is a contact sport. I think I would have been tempted to get a large cart and begin putting every single plant on the 50% off rack onto the cart and then push it around for several hours just hoarding them. Oh yes, people like that definitely bring out the dark side of my nature.
Me, too! Occasionally, it's come out my mouth, on the spot. I'm of the thought that all parts of the earth are mine as much as anyone's, so I couldn't toss something nasty out on another's yard, BUT, I could get vocal in the store if the day was just right. 'Course I'd probably go home and cry, but I bet there are a few folks more "enlightened." (ha!)
During the summer I was in Medford, OR at the Lowe's garden center. Several women were standing around a cart with a chihuahua puppy in it, oooing and ahhing, and visiting like they were in their own back yard. Not a big deal, except they were completely blocking the ONLY two-cart wide path in and out of the garden center and the registers. It didn't matter to me - I wasn't on a schedule, but a man leaving the store with a full cart and a clerk, probably on the clock, started grumbling and the women finally cleared aside, heckling the man. I commented, with a smile mind you, as I was happy to be where I was in no hurry, "He's right, you know. No one could get by." So, they turned on me. Group think. Being me, if I didn't speak up for the man and let the women be mean and righteous to him, it would have been like I supported them. Ah well...big nose people. :-)
