Alocasia Brancifolia

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

My newest addition Alocasia Brancifolia, I couldn't believe it when i saw it , they had no clue about it at the nursery and i think it was way underpriced at $8.95 so i tried not to show my excitement and scooped it up fast. One website says its quite rare but I don't know about that if its making it's way down here but then again a lot of the Aroid Wholesalers are in Hometead Florida which is just up the road, well 3 hours up the road.

It also says it has no true name.

it's a pretty decent size too about 32' from the soil.

And here's the best part, snakeskin stems.

Isn't it cool. I didn't think I would like it just seeing it in pictures, but I picked one up at the Aroid Show and Sale in Miami this year and I love it. It looks great planted in the garden.

Nice pics.

Nice!
I got a little one in a trade early this Fall.
It's even more beautiful in person (not that your shots don't show off it's rare form...lol)
You did GOOD!

I have one too, but it seems to be very temperature sensitive. Looks like it is debating about whether to go dormant (even in the GH).

I recently won one of these off ebay, about amonth ago, the other day I went out and looked it over cause it was droopy, and the top pulled right off of it, I was about to cry. I"m still thinkin about it. I saved the bulb, I so hope it comes back this spring. I'msick, I had 2 new EE's I bought do this recently. and I'm barely watering, temps in the greenhouse have gotten no lower than 50 so far, go figure. Iknow it was rotted. and I know I did it. I just hope it comes back from the bulb this spring, or I'll just have to buy more.

Sorry to hear that Kathy
Do save the bulbs they'll probably grow again ive had the same problem, if there's any rotting on the bulbs just cut it out with a sharp clean knife and you could try dusting it with a plant fungicide.

Neil,

The Aroid show and sale had tables and tables of Alocasias that were $9.00, so I was able to get a few I was missing from my collection like Brancifolia, Inoranta, Mark Campbell, etc. They were nice size plants as well.
Hopefully they do that again next year.

Gosh I wish they had sales like that around here,

I did check the brancifolia bulb yesterday and it had a little rot on it, so I"Lll cut that off today to make sure it doesnt' rot the rest of the way

My illustrus ee's do that every winter, they die down and come back . I'm hoping for the best.

I have some EE that go dormant too. Like A. Hilo Beauty, affins jennings.
And, even though I rationally know it will happen, it still freaks me out!
Just don't overwater!

Freaks us ALL out! LOL

I've taken many thru dormacy now.
The hardest thing is to leave them alone.

If you study the condition in which each one grows you'll get a better feel for it's life cycle.
Especially if it lives in a area w/ drought and monsoon weather patterns.
If it's on or near the equator and not on a mountain or in a rain shadow odds are it doesn't go dormant.
Hot dry Summers..... like cactus don't water and it may or will die back...Arum italica
Hot wet Summers basically a bog plant, etc... Colocasia e's

I picked up a Alocasia Brancifolia while at Home Depot in Oahu this year. I love it. I bought one for a friend and one for me. I think they were $6.95. I bought a Hoya too. They have some neat plants there that I don't find here in Texas.

So funny I do the same thing when i travel. My friends laugh at me when i want to stop in home Depot. Did you ship it home or carry it back.

That's the best part of traveling, we went up the east coast this past spring, and by the time we were headed home the whole back end of the pick up was full of plants, it was hard moving them around everytime we pulled off for thenight time. but we managed. I'm glad DH doesn't mind doing that. It's the best part ofmy vacations.

Next vacation , will be California . Hoping I get to do the same thing LOL but I will say, I have never found any unusual plants at our homedepot it's not worth the effort of ever going there.
