Some advice please

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

This is a picture of a plant that my good friend rooted for me from her mother plant.
I've wanted a variegated Monstera for a long time so when I received this in the mail to say I was excited is putting it mildly. LOL.
I want to make sure it stays healthy over the winter.
I've had it in a north facing window for about a month now.
Will it be happy there through the winter or does it need more sun?
Also do you keep the soil moist or does it like it on the drier side.
Any advice will be appreciated.

Whoa now !

Lucky you ;-))

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Lucky you, that's a beauty.

Gorgeous; I was also fortunate enough to get one from a friend. I'll post a picture next week. These are so rare, I feel we're really lucky!!

Mine is outside in zone 10 so I can;t really answer your question about water etc. I know they don't want full sun.

You have a very good friend indeed. That plant is a WOW.

Our Monsteras get 160" of rain a year...and they grow in lava cinder so the drainage is perfect....being aroids they need little to root and mostly just for an anchor. They will grow UP but will also scramble along the ground....I get more variegation when they grow up than when they travel on the ground. If you do grow it on a substrate, I would keep that substrate damp...and the whole plant warm...

Thanks so much everyone. I will keep it out of full sun and grow it up to keep the beautiful variegation.
I just hope it doesn't mind looking out the window at snow for the next 5-6 months. LOL

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Snow... if you grow it in soil (which is also prefectly ok), let it dry slightly between waterings. They'd rather be too dry than too wet, particularly when cooler. That said, they are very easy plants to grow (at least, they are for me in zone 9b), and are pretty tough. They prefer mostly shade, but even here in Houston, TX where it's mega sun in summer, I've had one growing in probably 70% sun (it really needed more shade, but it still grew just fine).

Nice plant and nice variegation!!

I must have the wrong friends........LOL

I just made a moss pole for my plain green one. It looked a little floppy at first but in a weeks time, it started standing more erect. I wonder how long I have until it takes over the top. It is most happy in a bright window but does just fine in a darker area but seems to ramble more.

howd you make a moss pole ?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hiya scooter! I remembered seeing them on another post but not exactly how they were made and the search was down. Piff! So I grabbed a 2x2 from the yard, cut it down to about 5' and attached chicken wire down the length of it with U nails except for where it goes in the dirt. Then I laid Spanish moss on top of the chicken wire and rolled it up. When we got all the way around (hubby helped) we secured it by wiring it back to itself. I just spritz the moss with a water bottle when I think about it.

This was from the day I did it and it was a little bit floppy but it sure has perked up quickly!

What we do in a crisis. LOL The moss was only $5 and hubby picked it up for me. The plant was already in the pot. AND it works. LOL

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Thanks Carter. I'm sure glad to hear it is an easy plant but also a tough one. Sounds like my kind of plant. LOL
What a great idea Chele. I've got the moss and the 2x2. The next time I go to DD's I'll get some chicken wire from her. Yours came out very nice and your plant is beautiful.
With everyone's great advice I feel much more confident that she'll grow fine over the winter.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks snow. I can't say it was an original idea. I think bwilliams was the one that posted the picture some months ago. I just took a stab at the best way to do it and it is working nicely.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I have the solid green one but would LOVE a variegated. I've moved mine into the gh for winter.

We could always plan surprise visit to to Wisconsin.....you wanna sidetrack snow or snag the plant??? Better yet, you sidetrack. I want the plant. LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

LOL! Michele, you are going the wrong direction. New Hampshire would be a bit further to your east.
