Hey, Kell! Is this one yours? I just bought one today and was wondering if I should have bought two. Does it need a second tree in order to get fruit?

I hope all is well with you, my friend.

Edited to add: Nevermind! LOL! I just found a super good link: http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/persimmon.html

That is good Clare for I know nothing. I see these all over this month, tons of orange balls hanging off trees with no leaves. I love the look. Christmas delight!

I am good! Hope all is well with you too!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, Kell! Thanks, buddy! I like the look and the taste. I think I'm going to plant it in back. I bought a Fuji Apple tree too:-)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Have your plans changed, Clare? Are you staying in So Ca now?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

No, unfortunately, we're probably not staying, and we're still renting and will probably stay here for another few years so I guess this Fuji tree and persimmon tree really belongs to the landlord, but maybe I'll get to have some fruit before we have to leave.

The roses are so great this time of year. I am very tempted to buy a couple of bareroot ones from Home Depot to add to the two that I have. I'm in love with my Mr. Lincoln. Do you have any favorites for fragrance and beauty that I might find at HD?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I agree, Mr. Lincoln is a great rose!!

I am terrible, I rarely notice fragrance. I know you are very fragrance driven. Color/gaud is my stimulus. LOL I have no clue way for I have a good smeller too, a big one at that. LOL

What specifically are you looking for Clare? Bush types? Big flowers? Solids or blends? I personally like entertaining roses that change, mostly blends. Solids rarely hold my interest for long unless they are huge and free flowering.

I think you need to do more roses. They are so easy except at pruning time, once a year. I am in the midst of it now. But in spring they give you such a joyous welcome to the season, you forgive them.

Let me know what traits you adore and I will ask Zuzu for you. She is a rose expert and knows the traits of each one. She is a tremendous source of rose knowledge as well as a real dear person. Do you know her? She mostly stays on the Rose Forum and a bit on the Pet Forum I think.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Kell! LOL! You know me so well. I'm totally fragrance driven. I have no clue about roses really except that I like my Mr. Lincoln and Chrysler Imperial. I think I'm just going to head over there today and see what strikes my fancy. I think I like blends too. Do you ever visit Rosemania.com? They have some nice ones: www.rosemania.com I don't know Zuzu, but if she loves plants and animals, then she is my kind of person:-)

They say that the persimmon tree is supposed to reach 25' in height and width. Is that true from what you see in your neighborhood, Kell? I think I may have to plant it in back.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

No, they are all smaller trees.

Zuzu had 15 cats when I met her, so an animal lover for sure. I bet she buys 200 roses a year if not more. lol. Zu can tell you the best online place to buy roses.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi, Clare. You, of course, are famous to me because of your fabulous photos, and you actually gave me some superb advice in the plumeria forum a couple of years ago when I was toying with the idea of growing plumerias. Alas, I lost all of them last winter.

Unfortunately, I'm also not fragrance-driven, so I can't pretend to be an expert in those matters, but I do grow most of the roses on the Rosemania site and I know these smell great: Angel Face, Double Delight, Ebb Tide, Fragrant Cloud, Fragrant Plum, Just Joey, Mr. Lincoln, New Zealand, and Secret. Mr. Lincoln, by the way, is my pick for the best-smelling rose on earth.

Rosemania is a good source for bare-root roses, and you don't have to pay any shipping charges if you buy at least three. I think they rate the fragrance of their roses in their descriptions too. Their earliest shipping date is February 11th. I just happen to know that because I ordered some of the new 2008 and 2009 roses from them not long ago.

By the way, Kell, I had 19 cats when you met me. I have 15 now. I'm cutting down.

My persimmon tree could easily grow to 25 feet in every direction, but I prune it back severely every year. When I bought the house, it hadn't been pruned for years, and it had a habit like a weeping willow. You could hide completely inside the lower branches, which hung down to the ground.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Zuzu, you are just a wealth of information! I do recognize your name now. I think it is postively awesome that you have 15 cats. I'd have that many if I didn't have a husband! LOL! I'd have that many dogs too!

Thanks so much for all the information on the roses and persimmon tree. I think I will plant the persimmon tree in back where it has plenty of room to spread out. My husband would not be happy if all those leaves dropped in front anyway.

I ordered from Rosemania too, but they are going to be shipped as gifts. I didn't order any for myself! Home Depot has them for fairly inexpensive, and so I thought I would head over there today if I can manage it. I totally agree with you about Mr. Lincoln. I have several in a vase right now, and they are huge and beautiful.

Thanks for the kind words, and I'm sorry about your plumerias. If you want to try again, I can ship you a couple for postage in the spring:-)

Thanks, Kell! Any friend of yours is a friend of mine:-)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Zu, Clare sent me lots of plumies this last year and they are doing just GREAT!!

Oh Clare, you are such a doll. Zu is too. Hey, we are all dolls. LOL

So funny Zu, I have never even noticed a persimmon tree in your back yard!!! LOL. Clare, Zuzu, unlike most of us in Ca has a HUGE garden. I bet I am usually looking lower............at all the roses.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Awesome! I don't have much land to plant, but I grow things for a while, and then I dig them up and plant something else. LOL! And then I dig those things up to make room for my plumerias in containers! LOL!

You're a doll too, sweetie:-)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I should have warned you too Clare, as you are a pusher of plumies, Zu is one for roses. Or as my husband says, your brain repeats at plumies and Zu's at roses. Mine repeats at so many plants, I am in even more trouble. LOL

But as your love for plumies is infectious, so is hers for roses. She will have your yard filled in no time if you give her an opening. LOL

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, Kell! If only there were room! I was just walking around the yard to see where I could fit some in, and it will be tough, but I think I can squeeze a couple more in. LOL! I went to plant the persimmon tree and then re-thought that place because that is where my plumies normally go. They've been moved to the patio for the winter. I suppose that I could just position the plumerias around the tree for a while until it grows really big. That should work. I'm off to Home Depot! I'll let you know what I bring back;-)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, I think I've been enabled! Okay, I got Heirloom, Double Delight, Lagerfeld, and Perfume Delight. I didn't see the other ones. Thanks so much for your help, Zuzu and Kell;-) I'm set! I would take a picture, but my hubby took the camera on his trip!

By the way, Home Depot had two plumerias in one pot for $20 -- not a bad price. Tradewinds was the company, and they weren't labeled with a color.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Clare, you'll love all four of those roses. The blooms on Lagerfeld, in particular, are the perfect hybrid tea shape with gorgeous buds.

Kell, you are so funny! I can see where you might overlook 4 of the 19 cats, but the persimmon tree is right above Pure Poetry, your favorite rose in my garden, and you even made an obscene comment about one of the persimmons on the tree about a month ago. It's the tree in the middle of this picture, the one reaching up to the sky with the white rose climbing up it.

The only one I have of those is Double Delight, Clare, and it is so delightful!!

LOL Zu. well now that you link it with obscene I so remember it. But to be honest, I still do not think I looked up. The particular fruit in question was probably at eye level. I bet I have its pic too but I will spare us all.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Wow, Zuzu! What an awesome picture of an awesome yard. Looks like a little slice of heaven to me. Just stunning.

I did plant the Persimmon tree in back just a little while ago. It will have the most room to grow big there. I also planted my Michelia x alba in back too because it was just getting too big for me to take with me when I have to move again. I'll take pictures as soon as I get my camera back.

Thanks again for your help, Zuzu and Kell, with the roses selection and the persimmon tree.

Zuzu, do you eat a lot of persimmons? I must have eaten a half dozen or so this past Christmas. I snatched them up when I found them at the grocery store. And then I read about bezoars, which kind of scared me a bit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persimmon

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Oh, come on, Kell! I want to see it!

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Clare, my neighbor's dog had that problem after she ate all the persimmons on the bottom branches of my neighbor's tree in one day -- probably 30 or 40 unripe persimmons. The vet fixed her up, but she was in agony that afternoon. She's a Rhodesian Ridgeback, so she's pretty big. I'd say you have nothing to worry about unless you eat dozens of unripe ones at one sitting.

The ones on my tree need a good frost to ripen them, so as soon as they start looking ready, I put one or two in my freezer each night, take them out the next morning, and eat them after they thaw. I love them.

Did you know that they're the sugar plums in all of the British Christmas stories and poems? Sugar plums are dried persimmons rolled in sugar. I was surprised when I first heard that, but then I realized persimmons are the only "plums" available in England and most other places at Christmastime.

Kell, post the photo. This is a fairly private thread, I think.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Oh, okay. I feel better then. Thanks! I love them too. I did not know that about the freezer. I'll have to try that. I thought sugar plums were actually plums! How interesting!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Kell, I just saw your pictures of Double Delight and Perfume Delight: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/168490/ Awesome! That pink is so you;-)
