It's a good day for birding around here today..I've already had hummers and finches in my yard. Here's a pic.
hummers this morning
Thats a great pic!! I love the hummers; can't wait to see them next year.
What a great pic...you should enter it in the contest!
TFS... I've been missing our hummers since they flew south! She's a sweetie!
fly girl: I'm waiting to get a pic of one eating out of my hand. I've done it before and usually let my friends do it when they come to visit. Right now we are having a bad bee month. I had to take down my feeders and don't know if I want to sit outside holding anything that has color or any sugar water, I'd be swarming with bees in no time. I wish I could have gotten that pic at a different angle so the colors on the birds would have shown up. I'll try again tomorrow morning.
Good idea....is there a pump in that watering can? That's neat!
oh cool shot. Your hummers are so much more prettier than ours and you have so many varieties. Our are gone for winter
fly girl: here's pic of the watering can, it goes from the water can to a tub and then to the pond. I'm still in the process of doing the pond...trying to figure out why the birds (sparrows & finches) won't go in it. Still working on getting things up high enough for the frogs to get in & out also. I'm making the pond out of stuff I have laying around so who knows what might end up in it.
Very nice, well at least the hummers like the setup. I had to put some big rocks around the inside edge of mine so the frogs could get out. I don't see many birds in mine either, I think they are afraid if they can't see what's in the water. I once saw a baby robin hop in and take a bath, but I bet he got a good scolding from his mom, I never saw him do it again lol.
Betterbloom - GREAT photo of your hummers! That is so awesome, really! I like your homemade fountain. Very unique and quaint. Too cute! :-)
Thanks becky, I'm trying to keep with the country look. Will see if I can get more pics tomorrow of the hummers.
That is such a cute setup! I agree with the earlier statement, I think you should enter the first picture in the Photo Contest.
Is there fresh water being pumped in at certain times? How often do you need to change the water or is it hooked up to a fresh supply? I'd like to make something so my hummingbirds can take a drink.
Yes! Cute picture for the contest. Definitely.
I've never seen hummers take a sip from my water spouts...I wonder what the secret is....
I don't know either..I do know that birds like dripping water, more so than standing water. I think I read somewhere that if hang a coffee can with a very small hole in it and let it drip into a pie tin or something they will go for it. The frogs will also.
Sorry, I forgot to mention: The watering can is hooked up to a pump, the water goes into a tub and then into my pond and back up to the watering can. You can skip the pond and just go from the watering can to a tub. I'm going to try and get a better pic before entering this one. I didn't like all the junk in the background but don't know if I can do anything about it right now,..that is my neighbors yard behind the pond area.
Excellent photos!!! Gotta love those hummies and finches :o)
I sometimes get hummies that zip through the sprinkler.
Also have a small plastic pond and noticed the little birds are too small to bend over to sip water. I added a terra cotta flower pot that sticks out about 1/2 inch above the water. They now perch on the rim of the flower pot and sip water easily. Guess they were afraid so slip in or just couldn't reach the water. They also seem to prefer the fountain over the pond. Maybe because that's about four feet off the ground and they can see around them better? They tend to be skittish when they are on the ground...probably afraid a cat or something will sneak up on them. I don't have cats...but the neighbor does. They like sitting on the edge of the fountain and don't mind the sprinklers and spray of water :o)
Maybe you could add a brick or floating board in the pond so they can perch on that and reach the water. I noticed they are all over the watering can...they seem to be able to reach the water from the spout there.
Here's a sparrow enjoying the fountain spray.
Cool betterbloom!
Very good pictures! I am so looking forward to the return of my hummies! I had a mister this year, which all the critters loved. I am needling at DH to get me a fountain for the back host gardens. That can/tub fountain is too too cute!
That's also a really nice fountain you have there cat!
Yes, I've heard all the critters like the mist sprayers. That's something I hope to eventually add to an area in my yard down the road. But it's going to have to be solar powered because I don't have any electrical outlets in the backyard. Only one on the screen porch. If I ever build another house, it WILL be different! lol
I'll bet the Hummers are catching the little drops that are flying in the air onto their bodys or mouth.
Nice pictures. : )
I agree, you should put them in the Photo Contest.

Cute little sparrow you have there Texas. I never thought about getting a mister, I'll have to see if I can get one hooked up. I'm running out of plugs also, and still wanted to put some twinkle lights in my yard around the pond. I'll have to work on that one.
