Growth tends to slow down or stop during cooler times of the year. Individual shoots will die back, but new stalks will grow from the rizome (roots) in the Spring. Be really careful about overwatering if your plant has stopped growing. Overwatering when the plant is dormant will rot its roots. I grow several types outdoors here in Southern California, but even here they stop growing during the coldest months. Good Luck!

Lavina,
Do you know what kind of ginger you have? Some varieties naturally go dormant while others are evergreen as long as they're kept from freezing temps. but return in the spring when things warm up (as long as it's root hardy for that particular zone). Even if up and growing in the winter water less. If it goes completely dormant don't water at all during the winter.

I just planted this European Wild Ginger this fall, and I just noticed that it looks like it's getting ready to bloom! Am I right? We have had many killing frosts here, but the last couple of weeks have been unseasonably warm. What is the normal blooming season for European Wild Ginger?
