I am going to be gone for about 10 days. I have wicked my large plants and have placed my cuttings and babies under domes or in plastic bags. I potted up the epescia and will water well before I leave.
Here's my question, The plants that are in plastic and under domes will not have very good circulation while I am gone. We will keep the house at about 65 during our trip. Will these plants develop mildew?
Are there any other suggestions that I might follow to have my plants healthy when I return?
Need advise
Before I got my heat mats, I used to provide a little extra bottom heat for flats of seedlings in the basement by putting the flat on a metal shelf and setting a 40 watt incandescent bulb beneath it. That seemed to raise the soil temperature 10 degrees or so above ambient. You could use an incandescent bulb or two to warm the area your plant stand is in, especially if you were to divide off that area from the rest of the house with a tarp... in your "plant room," it may be sufficient just to close the door and turn on a desk lamp or two. If you have a few days yet before you leave, you can experiment with simple ways of raising the temperature around your plants a little.
That said, it seems unlikely that your plants would develop mildew so badly in just 10 days that they wouldn't recover quickly when you returned... I know you're trying to avoid the problem altogether, but I don't think it's a major concern as far as the survival of your plants is concerned at least.
Have a wonderful trip!!!
Thanks Crit. I think I will try the tarp around the plants.
If you cover the light stand, even the little bit of heat from the lights might be sufficient... If you decide to add a 40 watt incandescent bulb under/behind the tarp as well, I would set it up ahead of time so you can stick a thermometer in there to check the temperature... I don't think it would get too warm, but... :-)
Thanks again. I have a quartz heater that I might set up in the room as well. If I put it near the stand and set it at 65 it will only come on if the room gets to cold.
Don't burn the house down.
Have a safe trip. ; )
Yes don't burn your home down. Your plants will be fine while you are gone don't worry.
