Bald and neglected

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I am a new member as of yesterday...you can see the reason why I joined! My husband and I bought this home recently, and, well, just look at it.

Actually, the house is wonderful inside with all the original charm ... but the lot is bald & exposed, and we are going to paint and restore the front by putting back the original columns, etc.

I went and looked at www.robsteinergardens.com, which was listed on one of the threads here. I liked the one named "before & after".

The good thing is, I don't have to rip any big plants out to start fresh.

The bad thing is, there's just nothing here.

I want to jackhammer out the concrete in the front parking strip, if the city will let me. That would help.

Our backyard has 2 groves of bamboo, with a weeping japanese maple under a HUGE maple tree. There is a definite asian feel to it.

I don't want the front to neccessarily be the same style, but I would like: modern, clean, restrained, interesting, & private.

There are a lot of "overplanted" lots here in Portland, and it is something I would like to avoid. So much grows so fast, and it's easy to try to do too much!

The front yard faces south, and the soil leans more towards clay than not.

Ideas, anyone? I know it is a lot to ask!!

Any comments are greatly appreciated.
