I just purchased a Mangrove from the grocery store. I was planning to water it using the Dirty water that collects in the gravel of my Son's fish tank. I have to siphon this filthy water out anyway to keep the fish healthy. Has anybody ever used this type of waste water to nourish mangroves before?
I got the idea because I remembered an article I read about a man that pumps his fish pond water through a miniature mangrove swamp in his yard to clean the water and keep his fish healthy, after it goes through his swamp he pumps the clean water back into his pond in one continous loop.
Mangrove and fish tank water
I don't know about mangroves, but the man was using what is commonly called a 'veggie' filter. I have one attached to my pond and everything grows wonderfully in it, plus it helps keep the water clean by using much of the waste products from the pond. I don't see why growing mangroves with your son's fish water wouldn't work just great. Lots of nutrients go to waste if you just pour the water down the drain.
Thanks pixydish, that's what I thought. No use letting those nutrients go to waste.
I collect the water that is backwashed out our filter to the pond. The stuff I get is very potent and I dilute it down with fresh water and use it on plants. You may want to check the ph so as not to burn your plant.
Jeri
Thanks for the tip about the PH Jeri. I should have thought of that.
The stuff that comes out of my filter is disgusting. It's thick at first and then dilutes to a degree on it's on but I gather a coke botttle of the first stuff and then just put some in a watering can full of water and it does great.
