There are these long scars that look like scratches and the trunk has splits in it! Can you tell me what's wrong?
Can you tell me what's wrong with DrSuess?
From the pic it looks to me like mechanical damage rather than pest or disease - but possibly someone else will recognise it as a symptom of something!!
If it is just mechanical damage I suggest either do nothing or prune it out.
I agree. Mine get rubbed on their stakes in the wind and look like that. Is there any black around any of the wounds? Any nodes that have it? If not, I bet it is fine like Alistair has said.

Why take a chance!!! I've never seen one to bust open like that. If you haven't seen a neighborhood cat using it for a scratching post, cut into the stem where it is exploding and take a picture to post, maybe someone will come along who has experienced this before.
If you have a place to keep it isolated, fine, if not toss it, just to be on the safe side. Dr Suess are plentiful and I'm sure someone will send you a cutting now if you start a thread saying you want a cutting.
Just my opinion.....

This is what it has progressed into.. it's UGLY and freaks me out! I'm tossing it, but thought you all should see it. I waited as long as I could.. I really love it.
If anyone has a Dr.Suess cutting they could send, I'd sure appreciate it.
This brug is potted and has always been isolated from the group. I don't have a cat.. sorry.. don't like em. So it couldn't be from a cat. It was a poor plant ever since I purchased it.
You made a wise decision to toss it ZZ.
Yes, good that you did toss it, it does look more like some sort of disease rather than scraped up. Who knows for sure these days. But these is an easy one to replace. Seems I hear of alot of folks having troubles with this one. I got my very first dr. Suess not long ago, still a baby.
