I think these are angel wing begonias (if anybody knows more specific name, please tell me).
Why did some of the leaves turn yellow?
Why are my begonia leaves yellow?
Hi-
I think those are Trout Wing Begonias. Looks a lot like mine. yellow leaves could be because they're receiving too much water. What do you think?
GH
That is probably 'Medora' and a common name is trout leaf like GH said. It's that time that most begonias are going to drop leaves especially if you had them outdoors. Just pick off any yellow ones and any that get spots. They will send out new leaves when conditions are right.
They were outside and when it started getting colder I brought them in. I did notice that they were VERY dry and gave them a good drink of water.
'Medora', I like that name.
Looks identical to mine that a DG'er Id'd as Dragonwing Begonia 'Benigo
'http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/132902/index.html
Here's a photo of mine. My leaves got real light in color like that when I had it in full sun and it got too much water. After a few days of being back in the shade it looked a LOT better! This is a very easy cane begonia to propogate .... roots very easily.

It really does look like that. So how am I suppose to know which it is?
It was in partial (mostly) shade when it was outside. When I noticed the leaves were yellow was when I noticed it was REALLY dry.
'Dragon Wing' is plain green and blooms like crazy. 'Medora' is a small leaf shrub. 'Benigo' is a mallet form and has larger leaves.
Here are some pictures of all 3.

'Benigo'

Checked out the Benigo in the PlantFiles. They are red on the back of the leaves. Mine are not.
I think the dots do look more like the Medora. Not much information in the plantfiles on it.
'Medora' was hybridized in 1926 (that's pretty old) and I've had it off and on over the years. It's almost weedy in summer but can quickly die in winter if kept too wet, too dry, or maybe even in too dark of a room. It seems to be an all-time favorite and can usually be found at Wal-Mart, Lowe's, and Home Depot at different times of the year.
'Benigo' can be a powdery mildew magnet (mallets seem to be more inclined for this problem) indoors. It is fairly new and looks like it was bred in 2000 so it may be a little harder to find.
'Dragon Wings' can now be found in two colors - pink and red and is so readily available nowadays (and inexpensive) that it could be treated as an annual. It seems very tolerant of sun in the landscape and is becoming a favorite to replace wax begonias. I wonder why they haven't come out with a bronze leaf in this variety?

Thanks for all the great info! My Begonia really looks like the one at that site: absastro.tripod.com, which you say is Medora? It also looked just like caganimalover's when it was in full sun! The leaves got real light in color. When I moved it to shade, the leaves got much darker as in my photo above. When another DG'er ID'd it as 'Benigo', I kinda thought it also looked a lot like 'Medora' too. I have never heard of Trout Leaf Begonia's before! I've had my original "mother" plant for a few years, not sure how long exactly, but I think it's been more than 6 years, can't remember where I purchased it, but it was either Wal-Mart or Home Depot! Never had powdery mildew, or any kind of insect problems on this plant. My plant is what I thought was called a cane begonia. I don't know what mallet form means ... mine doesn't have real large leaves. It does get long and leggy if I don't trim it back. Can you tell anything about which one you think mine may be by looking at the photo I posted above?
Sorry for all the questions; I have had LOTS of plants for MANY years, and have learned so much since joining DG a month ago!

Lin,
I am pretty sure yours is not 'Medora' and I'm not sure about 'Benigo' either.
Mallet type begonias are named after Arthur Mallet (who that was I do not know) and is usually some hybrid of U062 from what I've read. Some good examples of mallets are 'Looking Glass', 'Maurice Amey', 'Don Miller', 'Sinbad', and dozens of others.
Here are some articles on mallets. There used to be a very good article on this topic from Australia but it looks like that site is no longer in existence. I did happen to find a cached article on Google though.

Thanks for the links: After studying the pics at brads, kartuz and absastro, mine still looks like the 'Benigo'
So confusing! I will keep trying to ID it. Have made trades with DG'er's and labeled it as 'Benigo' which bothers me, since that may be wrong! If I ever do find out the true identity, and if it isn't the 'Benigo' .... I will notify my traders of the correct name!
I sure appreciate all your help!

If you ever get a chance to go to PHOE (Palm Hammock Orchid Estates) just a few miles south of Miami Intl. airport, take your plant along and see if they can identify it. They probably have 'Benigo' for sale as well.
I'm sure there are plenty of other sellers and growers of the same plant in your area but you'll just have to start visiting nurseries in your neighborhood to find them.
Check the ABS to see if there is a local chapter close to you as well. There should be some experts in your local club.
Good luck on your ID quest. Everyone is in the same boat.
