russian african violets
Oh, those photos definitely qualify as "eye candy!" TFS!
I've got leaf babies of two Russian varieties, but I've never seen a mature plant other than in photos. I'm looking forward to seeing how the foliage grows out... it looks so soft and wavy on many of those pics!
Just Beautiful Starfly : )
I have Russian leaves downs (from Bluebird)- they have been much slower to produce than other leaves I got @ the same time and even after them. They are finally making little babies.
Velvet Fantasy is BEAUTIFUL!
Maybe that's just true of the Russian varieties? I've been separating the larger plantlets from a lot of the other leaves I put down at the same time, but the Russian leaf babies are barely more than ears...
Jill when I made that comment to Allison she indicated that she'd had simillar experience w/ them so I am just being patient. They do have little ears and one actually has a couple of what I consider leaves, but really since I have put them down I put others down and already have several that are in their own pots and in have already flowered! Strange but I what are we doing do?
They are so beautiful in the pictures that they seem worth waiting for. I definitely have a new list of "must haves".
Russian plants are awesome ! I grew 12 different ones by leaf sometimes buying a leaf, buying a plant and using the leaves or given leaves from Peeps ! They progated many babies and I was lucky to be able to share a lot of plants and leaves with others !
My large Russian Snow Leopard new Mom says she is 24 inches plus and an exceptional plant she loves and babies and she plants on showing her in the Spring ! I am so excited for her !
I have one leaf with babies left of Ian-Selena , a leaf I kept when giving all Mom's away. It is slow but many healthy babies coming up. Not sure how she will do as she only has some natural light .
If you have a chance to grow some of these Treasures you will enjoy the experience !
Violet Treasure - I am very interested and curious about "Russian Snow Leopard" and would love to know more about it. Sounds like a wonderful variety. Is that the registered name? Can't find it in FCII. The only one I can find is 'Snow Leopard' by S.Sorano an unregistered semiminiature, so I know that's not it. If your friend's plant is over 24" across now, can you imagine how enormous it will be by spring? Might set a new record! I wonder how she will show it if it's not registered unless her club has a special class for Russian hybrids?
VT....I found it! So pretty! It is registered as 'EK-Snezhnyi Bars' (E.Korshunova) [9581]
Single-semidouble white large frilled star/lilac eye, violet edge. Medium green, pointed. Standard.
I wish I could see a photo of your friend's plant.
Yes it's registered Snow Leopard is English name. I grew it by leaf but from the one leaf I bought from Bluebirds I grew several of them and gave them away to people hare on the forum. She bought this one from me last summer for $25.00 along with many other plants.
EK-Snezhnyi Bars (9581) 01/17/2006 (E. Korshunova) Single-semidouble white large frilled star/lilac eye, violet edge. Medium green, pointed. Standard
I've posted many, many picture of it in this forum from it's very first bloom and when it had large boguets. It's not an old plant it was just a year and few months ago I put the small tiny leaf down. I ask Bluebird why the one leaf was so small she said they grow that way. Well I'm going to tell you this plants foliage one leaf is bigger than my hand and serrated and shiney smooth. Most beautiful plant. I am glad when I sold my stands/lights and all my plants it went to a good home. She also bought from me another 20-24 inch baby
Guelph's Christmas (9120) 04/20/2002 (J. Brownlie/Guelph University) Semidouble-double fuchsia large frilled star/thin white-green edge. Medium green, quilted, glossy, wavy, serrated/red back. Large
Both plants were in 5 inch azela pots with leaf rings and large when she bought them from me. They were fun growing and I am happy she is enjoying them !
Thanks for the added info, VT ! Sure is a very lovely Russian variety as I can see on your other threads. The hybridizer should have described her plant as 'large' vs. 'standard' I'm sure you will agree.
I'm under the impression that many of the Russian varieties are "large standards" even if they're not officially described as such... ?
Oh, I didn't know that. I have never seen any in person or have tried growing them myself.
It's just an impression... everyone seems to talk about their large leaves... but I'm not saying my impression has any basis in fact! (why are you still up at this hour? I'm going to bed now... I have bulbs to plant in the daylight!)
I was just going to ask you the same thing! LOL!
I think some are reg standard 12-16 inches across and some 18 and more. Some information might have got lost in translation ? I fount the Russian Velvet Fanstasy grew large and the Snow Leopard I use the English names easier to recall and spell :))
Then I thought maybe enviorment ? Many people growing to show re-pot their large growing plants often and into large pots ?
But my Snow Leopard with her new Mom who is totaly crazy about her says she has grown a lot more and perfect shape. She has her own personal grow light ! When she went home with Bonnie I had changed leaf rings twice sizes up and she was just getting to hang over the one she was wearing. Bonnnie
says she is waering a size larger .
I am so please being a large plant kept growing and doing well in her new home. She alos lives in FLorida but more up North .
I do like how the Russian plants grow and bloom. They also remind of more of the old fashion African violets Grandma had .
And those were large and always blooming !
Lot's of the Russians are Sports of others. Snow Leapoard is the Sport of the one that blooms all Purple I'd have to look up on the SPort list to write the name .
