What level of Dante's Inferno was gluttony? Marcy...........

Here is a picture of my newest Home Depot find. Did I need both of these Hoyas australis' ? No. Could I possibly have left one of them at the store, or even offered one to my hoya collecting friend? Yes. However, they looked so much like the awesome picture of Marcy's australis, that I figured if one was nice, two would definately be better. To top it off, I have the Hoya australis ssp. australis that Marcy had on ebay this summer, but not this one. I know that there is disagreement re: whether ssp. tunipes is smooth or fuzzy, but this one is the smooth one.

Marcy, I really want to blame you for this.........that australis growning up those hangers you posted a picture of was absolutely awesome. However, I am no longer in grade school, (though DH may debate mental maturity/self-control/inability to share.........), so I wholly realize the blame lies with me, and me alone. HA! Here are the before and after pictures. I figured that as long as I was buying BOTH plants, I may as well get a pretty planter to put them in.

Good for you, Sara....blame it all on Marcy and then you canbuy somemore and be totally guilt free as it IS her fault!!! HAHAHAHAHA

Thanks Carol......Postive reinforcement is soooooo much better than negative!! HA! I really can't say I feel too guilty. The weather is soooooooo cold right now, that HD and EA plants are really my only options for hoyas in the winter, as I wouldn't dare ship anything until spring.

Sara - those are a totally awesome find and of course you needed the planters to go with them - I totally understand about MT winters - they are brutal! And you NEEDED them to feel better in the bleak, cold and totally gruesome months ahead! LOL (ahem, I also remember MT winters with no snow and pretty mild conditions for most of them)

Becky,
Really, I can't complain toooo much this year - only one snow, one really cold spell (11 degrees) but it was just in the 70's last week, and is in the high 40's right now. I just never trust the weather enought to ship anything in. Thanks for the pos. support guys, I know just where to come to get all the "oooohhs and ahhh's" that tend to be lacking in my house! HA! If it isn't football, basketball, pizza onion rings and beer, it is "yawn worthy" as far as DH is concerned!!

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Hehehe - I have finally gotten my DH to utter enough ooohs and ahhhhs to give me that "extra happy boost" - it's a fair trade in my house - I ooooh and ahhhh in appropriate amounts over the score of the game - and he gives the plants a nod here and there! LOL I am a very lucky woman in that respect - he encourages my plant obsession - as long as it ain't his $$'s! And it does not infringe on his all-day Sunday watching of football! We have a nearly "football free zone" upstairs and he gets to watch all the games he wants on "his" TV in the basement!
He is however in "plant training" at the moment - I am heading to Europe in a couple of weeks and he will have the responsibility of watering and misting for two weeks - AND he is deathly afraid of killing them - I have to do some rearranging of my lighted plant rack - water, not so much and hardly any! When I went to MT this summer he was truly scared to death - he had to water all over outside and inside - this time it's only the Hoyas and they are gathered all in one spot! :)

LOL - what a good sport your DH is!! My husband's TV is in the basement too, but since it is a HUGE screen, and there is a large sectional and the computer (totally finished area), he is very happy down in his "cave". Upstairs in our house is pretty "ball-free" too (not just football here, basketball too). Tomorrow all of his fantasy football league is comming, and LOL he has been CLEANING to prepare for his company!!!!!

Your husband should do fine with your hoyas....how long will you be gone? How exciting. Where in Europe will you be going? A good friend of mine from Germany offered to bring cuttings back to me from Amsterdam, as he is in that airport......I am not sure if it is a good idea or not. Wouldn't want him to get into trouble. He said that as long as the plants at no time turn into "pot", he should be able to avoid arrest!! HA!

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

LOL we have the "cave" too - and the office I work out of is the "dungeon"! And he cleans for football company too!

I'll be gone for two weeks, heading to Denmark this time to visit a colleague there - ah - I would not bring back any cuttings, he won't get arrested, but, they will be confiscated in a heartbeat (if he gets caught that is, hehe)!
The only "plant fun" I will have is searching for pots and planters, when I was home in Norway this summer it nearly killed me in the florist stores, they had all kinds of plants and "stuff" I wanted to bring home, but, I had to prioritize on what I brought back (chocolate, hehe)- had to pay for excess weight as it was - planters would have truly brought the $$ to same price as ticket! LOL This time I am not bringing back too much (yeah, whatever) - that will wait until I go back to Norway in January - I truly had my hubby mortified in the grocery store by buying $500.00 worth of chocolate/foods to bring back - I told him to shut up since he reaped the benefits! Men truly don't think ahead do they?

Way t go Sara! Just like you blame Marcy, now the next time I come home with 2 or 3 of the same plant I can tell the DH that it's all Sara's fault! Thanks! -joanne

Awesome plants!

Wow...Sara, GREAT find. I do think those are the same type of australis that my one that is climbing up the hangers on the palm tree. That one has smooth (glabrous) leaves on both front and back. They look just stunning in the new pot and trellis too. Should be covered in no time. I find that particular type a VERY fast and easy grower. It is also a pretty one as the new leaves tend to be chocolate-maroon colored.
I have another dark leafed one that is smooth on the top but pubesent or felt-like on the underside of the leaves. The new leaves on it are the same dark green color. It bloomed the same type of flowers that the other one did however. I think that one may be the one people have referred to as "Brookfield". Not really sure about any of them though. The one I have as australis ssp australis is a lighter, sort of apple green and pubesent on both the top and bottom of the leaves. It blooms a bit bigger and whiter flower with hardly any red under the coronas. They all smell great though.
Oh...and you can blame me all ya want. I always blame all the rest of DG for my addictions too. Ya gotta blame SOMEONE. Ha.
Congrats.

Thanks guys.......LOL Marcy, thanks for not taking it wrong, I TOTALLY realize that my complete lack of self-control is mine and mine alone. I just couldn't believe how similear the climbing growth pattern was to your beautiful australis pics. I bought the pubescent australis from you on ebay this summer (lighter green fuzzy on top and bottom). This one is like you described, glabrous on top and bottom, maroon new growth almost chocolaty dark. I am still thrilled with it, and don't regret buying both.
