rooted cuttings

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Hi,
I have received rooted cuttings in a trade...can I put them into four inch pots, or do they need to be larger? Thanks for your help!

I don't know how big your cuttings are, but I'd go with a bigger size.

I go from a 20oz cup to a 1gal container. For me it works well but do what works best for you.

Okay, I will see what I can find, on hand...thanks for the help!

Depends on the size of the root ball. I keep them on the smaller size during the winter, and only water lightly.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Me too, Mary. I can have trouble with rot in winter. Cold and wet together are bad. Lots of time, the roots do not grow much in winter so you can get away with a small pot and then when you see the plant actively growing, pot it up to a bigger size then.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks so much for that information! I did put most of them into a four inch pot...I had a couple that had higher roots so I did put them into a large pot, so I will watch for new growth..none of the root balls were really large, but nice roots on them.

Okay, I am getting a little parnoid about the brugs I have rooting in the bubbler...they are rooting great, and have new growth on them...I have seen where others are concerned about bugs, rot, and all kinds of things...I don't know whether to pot them up so I can have more room in my "aquarium" bubbler for other things...if I should cut off the new growth...will they get bugs inside during the winter in the basement?....do I need to treat them....what causes the rotting I have read about...am I making this too hard..LOL...just don't want to kill them over the winter...I was thinking when I got them, after they rooted I would pot them up and leave them in the basement (unheated) and water a little here and there, not let them get too dry, and then plant them in the Spring...it seemed like it was going to be easy, but I have read so many conflicting things...can anyone tell me the easiet way to handle them and keep them from dying or falling prey to the bugs and rot...thanks for your help...

i think spider mites are a problem inside no mater how hard you try. i have a maya from Kell and every time it comes in i get spidermites. i use insecticidial soap.

now i have a few cuttings in water right now but its gotten cold lately so they are staying in there cups. i have one set that has been in a cup for a month now. me personally i plan to keep them there till warm weather comes. i have read here others have left them in water through winter.

but i know if you plant them and they stay wet then they will rot. you need to water then let dry out then water. once planted they dont like soggy roots. my maya when to wet droops until the excess water is gone.

this is based on my maya expirience. it may be different with others but spider mites are a problem for all during the winter.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Okay, I will have to look up spider mites...LOL so I will know what they look like...it has been a while since I had plants inside, are they little greyish brown bugs that gather on the plants? I will see what info I can find...thanks!

What is "cold" to a brug? I have mine sitting in 68 degrees or so right now (my room temperature), and some seem to be growing quite well, and some are really slowing down. I do think that they grew better in 72-75 degrees last month - that is, until I got my utility bill and had to turn down my heater!!

Do I need to worry about rot in 68 degrees?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have no experience really with a bubbler. But I think from what I have read, people use it in the winter in cool place so the growth is not rampant. They then pot them up in spring when they have more room. Are yours inside in warmth, Janet? Sounds like you are doing great!! I think I may try it too this year in my hoophouse now that I have electricity out there. Anyone know how many air rocks you need for a 5 gallon pail?

Oh Marie, do not even say spider mites. I had them so bad this last summer. I HATE them! I am always careful too with my watering when I first pot up cuttings, rooted or not. Seems that is when they are most vulnerable to rot.

Victoria, I only worry about rot on full grown brugs in the winter here when it is under 50 degrees outside and raining every day for weeks. I would say at 68 your brugs should do great unless you drown them. In winter they do slow down no matter where you have them so they need less water.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Yes mine are all inside...here are some pictures of what I have going...some already potted that were sent rooted, and some in the bubbler...also noticed a couple of the ones in the basement are a little bit shriveled on the tops does that normally happen or am I not watering often enough...

Do you have a live slug in that tank? I guess it would clean the glass?

Anyway, I know nothing at all. And having said that, I would move your bubbler where it is cooler so it slows it all down. The top growth can't be too healthy unless you start to feed them and then they will get way too big for your set up. Or you may want to pot them all up when the roots are not too, too big. And then give them enough sun and warmth to grow. They would do great in a window in the house. But keep in mind I know nothing about bubbler growing other than a lot of reading on here. I am always intrigued by it.

Hopefully a bubblerer will come tell us both!

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

No, no slug...it is just H2O and Hydrogen Peroxide..it has stayed so clean too! Thanks for your input!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Janet, are you sure. I can even see its little antennae by the blue X.

That is sooo funny!!! No it is a leaf of some kind, I will have to get it out...I just checked...LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

It did look like a slug, didn't it? LOL

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Yep it did...LOL

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Well... I had quite a few fish tanks in my day.. so the one thing I know about the bubbler is that it circulates the water and keeps oxygen in it.. so it stays clear. The water needs sun to get algae, so you don't have to worry about the glass. If you use a dark container, no algae problems!
I only had one cutting rot in the bubbler and it was green to start with. I don't change the water in the bubbler unless it gets cloudy, which it never has.
One bubble stone is good for a 5 gal bucket, but I use the bubble "curtains" they are long and have suction cups at the bottom to stay down.
I make several connections by using a "T" to tap into a line and drop a small bubble stone in a vase. That way I can have several different types of plants without mixing them in the same bubbler.. I'm kinda weird about that. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What great advice. Thanks Joyce. I am going to try this on a couple 6 ft cuttings and put them in the hoophouse. Will the pet store have the bubble "curtains? I have a set up from 2 years ago. I think I could do 10 containers from the one connection piece I bought. I will get more of the tubing. Where is a cheap place to get the tubing? I have a little motor though. Do they come in bigger sizes? Or maybe using so many tubes off the one motor reduces how much bubbles you get?

It is so good to keep them separated. You never know when one is sick and you will spread it if they share water. I never mix cuttings.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Joyce, I didn't know any better when I set mine up and threw all of them in together...so I guess I will just have to hope I am lucky and not spreading anything...LOL I have the bubble curtain in the bottom as well as the other filter that is running on the side...I think I am going to take out the rooted ones this week and pot them up...I just got another box of rooted brugs....so I am going to pot them as well...can I just pot them and put them in the basement...should I move them from the window to a darker area? They are getting a lot of growth, should I cut this off? I was hoping they would kinda go dormant for the winter sleep in....lol any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks so much!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Kell... I get my bubble stuff from Walmart.. I think it's the cheapest. I have 2 bubble curtains and 2 vases from my pump.. the pump has 2 outlets for air, so it is a little stronger. You can see how many gallons a pump will handle on the package. Like a 10 gal aquarium.. I'd say you could "guestimate" how many gallons of water that will bubble.. Like maby 3 or 4?? It would be my guess also, that if the water doesn't stay clean, you don't have enough air to circulate the water. Just a guess though!

Janet, I put all mine together last year with no problems.. I'm only being more careful now cause I have some "single" cuttings that HAVE to live.. LOL
I am totally ignorant to overwintering.. I have a place for them to grow inside, so I don't know what you should do.. sorry!

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks anyway...I will most likely kill half of them..LOL but I will learn what to do somehow...I usually do well just going with my gut, and not pampering too much....so I will most likely just pant them and see what happens....if they do good, I know and if not I learned the hard way...lOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

OK, I will go into the the giant Walmart. I rarely go there. Just so big and too many people. Someone mentioned a rack there the other day on Dave's that I want to look at also for my hoophouse. I better go soon before it becomes nuts for Christmas!! THANKS AGAIN!

Janet, I would never let young cuttings just rooted go dormant.

It sounds like you will have a brug farm next summer. Brugs just seem to keep multiplying!

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Okay, I will pot them up and keep them in the basement, by the window and keep them on the dry side, right...and see what happens..LOL

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Oh, Kell, sorry to break it to you but the WalMart holiday madness started a couple of weeks ago. The Walmart is a zoo here now... except at 3am.. when I frequently shop ... then the ailes are full of boxes they are stocking the shelves with.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Your so welcome Kell.. I'm surprised you don't bubble everything! I have a bucket outside with no bubbles, it got yucky several times.. then all of a sudden, huge roots.. and the water is crystal clear still.. I stuck a bunch more it it cause I'm already getting a little sick of throwing sheets over everything..... I chopped some more today.. I'll worry about seed pods this spring. LOL If it's already freezing like this in Nov.. I wonder what Jan is gonna be like! .

Yeah, speaking of crowded.. I get to the walmart at 7 am thinking I'll beat the crowd... there IS NO beating the crowd!! Tammie is so right. I hate going there too, I hate it even more when I forget my list!!!!!!

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

Ok I just have to put my two cents worth in here! LOL!! I don't have a bubbler but this is what I do. Each cutting has it's own glass. I fill it with water and add 5 drops of peroxide to each. The water I change about every other day. I try and keep the water cool. They are in my kitchen on a shelf so I can remember to change the water. The only light they get are from a lamp. My larger cuttings (2 ft or more) are in a five gallon bucket in my bedroom. I know you aren't suppose to mix cutting but due to the space factor I have no choice. The ones in the bucket are in a cool dark corner. I add about 15 drops of peroxide each time I change the water, which is about once a week. I only keep about 5 " of water in the bucket. So far I have only had one to rot, which I cut off, and now it has roots. Once again due to the space factor, I am keeping them this way thru the winter (fingers crossed). My DH thinks I have completely lost it. He laughs at me hobbling around checking each one. But so far so good. I have lots of roots. I just hope that I haven't thrown my luck out the door!! LOL!!

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Sounds like it is a working plan! That is great!
