sp. Chicken Farm

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

My sp. Chicken Farm has finally rooted, and I'm looking care information. This is one puppy I don't want to lose. Anyone...anyone?

Awanda, according to my friend Maggie, H. sp. 'Chicken Farm' (EKW 97-005) was collected by Eva-Karin Wiberg (hence the EKW accession code) in Borneo, where she found it in a small forest behind a chicken farm. It's great to hear you got yours to root! Mine is just now starting to develop some new growth.

Edited to say ... I keep mine in bright light (west window) and the soil consistently moist, but not wet, and the temperature does not get much below 70 degrees F. I have my rooted cutting in a mixture of 1/2 seedling mix and 1/2 orchid bark. I can't wait to hear how yours is doing.

Does anyone know what the flower on that one looks like, or where to find a picture?

Thanks MK, mine took a long time to root, so I was really happy when it did. Thanks for the care info. Right now I have mine under grow lights and it seems to be happy. I'll keep you updated on the growth and you do the same:-).

Karen you should know I wouldn't pull yours or anyone else's leg:-), now MK, well that's a different story. Actually it is the real name of a hoya.

Hee Hee, darn I got caught! It's easier if someone is setting in a barkalounger with the foot-rest up. There you can place one hand around the large toe while easily wrapping the palm of your hand around the back of your victim's ... erm ... friend's heel, then just give a nice sharp tug. I think Ms. Wiberg got the best of all of us by naming her plant that (LOL).
Ann

Someone must have run out of names when they got to that hoya!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Actually...sp. Chicken Farm is NOT the REAL name of any hoya. H. sp. Chicken Farm is what one person has called it in order to give it a name because they didn't know the correct name for that particular species... Others have been called H. sp. Sulawesi, H. sp. IML 831 (aka H. sp. Philippines) etc. Giving an unknown species a species name that is easy to remember is a good idea...there is SO much confusion with H. sp. Philippines (for instance) ... I have 3 with that name...so have to attach the IML number to them to differentiate them....

Oh no sp. Chicken Farm isn't the "REAL" name of this hoya? And all this time I've been calling it sp. Chicken Farm Clark! I can't even beging to imagine what this will do to little sp. Chicken Farm Clark". I'm sure he's going to be teased by the other hoyas, calling him names, like Henry, Fred or even worse, no name Clark. I'd better get him into hoya counselling to help him deal with this! Why didn't they tell me his real name when he was sent to me? Does this mean I"m not a good hoya mommie? I just can't type anymore, I'm too emotionally drained now....I'll keep everyone updated as to how "no name Clark" is taking all of this.

Blessings,
Awanda aka Mom of "no name Clark" fka sp. Chicken Farm"

Carol, when Eva-Karin Wiberg collected this she gave it an accession number (EKW 97-005), and since I got mine from Maria in the hoya swap, and it had that information on it, is it a wise idea to continue to keep that name (sp. 'Chicken Farm') and the accession number on the label and leave it at that? Or, do you suggest some other identifier so that I know it may be the same as another hoya species?
Help ... I gotta figure this stuff out :-)

Gee...good question, Ann. I think it could be called H. sp. EKW97-005 (aka H. sp. Chicken Farm).
