feels like a hoya...

Vista, CA(Zone 10a)

I picked this up at a local nursery the other day because after touching the leaves I just couldn't walk away...It looks like a philodendron but the leaves are much waxier than any I have ever touched, I am new to hoyas and this looks much brighter than those I have seen, any opinions?
Thanks!

You did good, it is a hoya and a very nice one at that. It's Hoya Polynuera!!

Learn from my mistake and don't water it as much as the others :)

Lovely plant Abbie!! Also known as the Fish Tail Hoya. Yes, I agree, you should grow it drier than most hoyas, mine was too late to save, I just watched it slowly die.... 8-(

Wow, what luck, I was completely convincing myself it wasn't a hoya afterall but for 9.99 it was worth a try...Thanks for the id & growing tips! I used to have problem with overwatering, I think I may have it under control finally...

Abbie, is that the one you are selling on ebay?

Thanks Patti, I am still patting myself on the back, all this id business gets confusing...they are all pretty plants, but I do so love the hoya blooms...I can't even count the number of plants I walk by convincing myself not to get because they just "appear" cool, but aren't anything special, or worth the extra money...then I see pictures of them blooming on line the next day - I have rushed back to get a few of the 'left behind treasures' to find that someone has (of course) already scooped them up! I think i left behind 3 other hoyas when i talked myself into this one I was uncertain of, I have bruising from all the times I have kicked myself!

Ann, I just have 2 cuttings from it on ebay, in with a lot of others, but I am happy to share with the folks on Daves for just the 4.05 shipping if you would like some! (shh don't tell the ebayers!!)
I do ebay to try an recoup some of my plant expenses, though this doesn't really work '& I usually just end up buying more... ;)

Abbie,

I would LOVE a couple rooted cuttings of this if you wouldn't mind rooting it for me!!
I have been looking for this cutie for quite a while.
I can't seem to root hoyas but would be more than happy to send you some the ones I can take cuttings of in exchange.
The ones I have that are large enough (I know they are probably already ones you have but):

Sheperdii
Kentianna
Curtisii

Do any of those interest you at all?

Most of my hoyas are only babies other than the basic ones that HD occasionally carries which are the ones listed above.

I would greatly appreciate it!

Abbie: I would love a cutting for postage. That is, if you have any of your plant left after posting that photo here on DG! I figured you would be inundated with offers! Let me know if you still have cuttings available!

Thanks,
Lin

Abbie, your polyneura is wonderful!

My polyneura just opened up an umbel a couple of days ago. I'm happy about that since it lost lots of buds when I had to take it inside. It likes change of temperature days/nights. But when it had to move inside because the nights were too cool, most of the buds fell. One umbel did it, though!

Here it is when it is just beginning to open up.

And here is a picture from last autumn's blooming.

What great shots you got of those. You should be proud... It is not easy to get polyneura to bloom. Where did you have it outside (shade or partial sun, etc). I have found, I can make mine happy now, but still have never got it to bloom. It is a lovely bloom too. It is a shame though that the plant carries the bloom underneth the leaves like that. Makes it easy to miss. I know when I check my plant for blooms, I always look underneat the long vines as I had heard that is the case with this plant, but I never find any. Lucky you. Congrats.

Thank you, Marcy!
I have it outside on my balcony during spring - autumn. Mostly in shade but maybe a couple of hours a day of sun.

wow Lotta very stunning!! upon closer inspection it looks like there are umbels on mine but they seem dried up ;( Thanks for the temp hint, hopefully I can see some new blooms still (maybe there is a non dried umbel hanging in the mess...)
Marcy, I know what you mean about the underside blooms, it drove me nuts for my first 2 months with hoyas...now I have them hung all above my head - hopefully I will catch all the action this way;)
My H. Bella up on her hook - she has grown so much in just a month!!

Great find, AbbieO!

My polyneura is nowhere near that size!

Bet you're glad you failed to resist temptation this time!!

Last weekend I saw hanging baskets of polyneura for sale at home depot. They all were drooping sadly. I didn't think to feel the soil. Are they finikey?
