compact forums of episcia

Yesterday I potted up my Silver Skies into a 6 " hanging basket because it had just gotten too big for the 4" pot and was hanging out all over the place even after I snipped more stolons to root and I like the way it looks in the basket.I like the compact form of SS and I love the color of Strawberry Patch but not the way SP falls apart after it gets big so I'm wandering what your favorite compact forums are..especially the red colored ones. I like the looks of Annette.

Bigred,

Episcia 'Coco' is a smaller compact grower with color. Also 'Malaysian Ruby' and 'Pele' are both more on the compact side and have nice rose coloration.

I am glad you asked that question because I was thinking the same thing about Strawberry Patch and also my Tropical Topaz. I was wondering if I was doing something wrong.

How do you guys pot/display them?

I am really liking Malaysian Ruby as well, for its compactness.

If your strawberry patch is getting leggy, it could use more light. Mine grew big but densely when I put it outside where it got direct late morning-noon sun. It stays somewhat leggy even under t8 fluors, but grew quite well under two 125W compact fluorescents.

Mine isn't getting leggy so much as it doesn't grow in a completely upright maner.

My big SP is sitting 'bout 5-6" from florescent light fixture. I turn my lights on as soon as I get up(3:30 this am) and turn them off 6-7pm.Only thing I can figure is the light is not on consistantly the same hours.

A timer could fix that... and they'll be on sale soon for the holidays. :-)

critter,
the bench lights are wired directly into the overhead light's switch which has pull chains so I can turn over head lights and fan off while the light benches stay on. Hub's way of getting out of having to run seperate wire and outlet to light benches.

I grow mine in natural light have for years and fount is stolons are taken off new branch grows in pots same wa with Alsobia Cygnet. I've put some under lights here and there Aussie Alice or Blue Heaven they did well but they show not bounderies when grown well and soon were in large hanging baskets. When my Alsobia Cygnet was in a full bushy 12 inch pot Hubby rigged a grow light to be right over it this kept it deep lush green and blooming all the time.
I do have a nice on it 5 inch pan pot so full and bushy in natural light blooming all the time
I had some Chiritas under light not blooming. About two weeks ago a few were moved onto our new porch in nice sun and covered with buds when before I could not get them to bloom. So cool !
Just have to play around for what's best for you !

V_T,
All my plants look healthy but I just don't like the way Strawberry Patch and Faded Jade fall apart in the center. Yesterday on FJ,I removed some more of the small stolons to root ,took the much bigger stolons, turned them back around into the pot and pinned them down w/ some folist wire I bent into pins.Covered up the vacant spots so nicely...kinda like the bald guy comb-over...LOL. I'm going to transplant SP into a basket and do it the same way.

Mine look very healthy too but the main stem looks like a roller coaster or snake!

Bald guy comb over!!! lol with tears!!

april,
try the comb-over...I just did FJ yesterday and SP just now. They look soooo much better. FJ was bigger so it's fuller looking,SP I had removed a bunch of baby stolons from just yesterday so I didn't have as many stems to work with but w/ a little time and maybe some rogaine,it'll look fuller too.
