Fruit Cake

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I know not all people like fruit cake but I love it and so do several members of my family. I made 2 yesterday and they turned out great. The fruit is so expensive to put in them. I had to use 8 cups of dry fruit and 2 1/2 cups of pecans. I hope every one that eats it will appreciate it. I have already wrapped them or I would have posted a picture. I never thought of it soon enough.

I've never tasted a 'bad' fruitcake...though I don't eat it very often.
They had some reduced at Dollar General last year so I bought a couple....they were quite good and very cheap!

I've noticed that the fruit (and the pecans...they're always expensive, IMHO!) that comprises fruitcake is quite pricey....I wonder how they can sell them so inexpensively around the holidays, with that in mind? Must be a 'buy in bulk' thing.

Makshi,There is nothing like homemade fruit cake.Makes my mouth water thinking about it! YUMMY!! I have never had any luck making them.Always turn into a really "expensive" inedible brick that the birds don't even want to touch when I throw it outside. Now thats pretty bad huh ? LOL .Whats your trick?? : ) Nancy

No one but me likes it in our family. When I was growing up it was a great tradition.

Me too! My mom didn't like the heavy texture of the usual fruit cakes so ours were made out of an applesauce loaf cake that she filled w/ walnuts, dates, marishino cherries (sp) both green and red- I used to love them and always wondered why we couldn't have them year round! In my own family, none of them like fruit in cakes! Frankly they won't even let me put raisins in oatmeal cookies or nuts in fudge or chocolate chip cookies! Think I will divorce them all this year!

I know that fruit cakes have to be cooked on low temp. and have a pan of water sit under the pan as they cook. It took 2hrs. to cook these on 300 degrees.

April-devorce is a good option for those that don't like things in there cookies and cakes. :)

april,
they wouldn't make it in my house. I toss in everything but the kitchen sink. Had my own receipe for a cookie I called "Loaded for Bear" because I couldn't make up my mind one day which cookie I wanted to bake and didn't want to bake a bunch of different ones so it had everything in it...oatmeal,coconut,peanut butter, chocolate chips, raisins, nuts and whatever was in the cabinets. Took 'bout 3 yrs to prefect the receipe then I lost it and have made a decent bear cookie since.

This year when I do Xmas baking may just have to do it my way...more for me I guess!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Bigred that is my kind of cookie. You would know you had one of these. That is sort of the way of the fruit cake I made. I just counted up the cups of fruit I needed and than measured that many of what I had since I didn't have everything stated. It looked so good that I had to wrap it quick before I was tempted to dig in.

I agree, sounds like SOME COOKIE, BR!!!

makshi....why not go ahead and 'dig in'!!? LOL!
(I think I would have!)

Now Now Nan don't encourage me. I do thing BR should find that recipe and make us all a cookie and we could have a party.

Oh now you're talking!

that recipe probably went the way the recipe for my bbq sauce and german pancake(luckly I found the pancake recipe in a centuries old (kidding)magazine last Tuesday while waiting my turn to see the dr.)...and the matching socks that disappear in the dryer. Do you suppose every house has it's own little Brumuda Triangle that swallows up these things?

That is an age old mystery isn't it? Where do all of those socks go? I know that I put them in the washer and they are never seen again. Yes, we must all have a little Bermuda Triangle.
