When crossing brugs for the purpose of hybridizing, is there a difference between using one plant as the mother as opposed to using the same plant as the pollen donor?
Ok, my question sounds confusing, lol. For example, a cross of Super Nova X CG as opposed to CG x Super Nova.
Does the order have an effect on inherited traits etc?
Are some brugs more useful as pollen producers, while others are better moms?
Question on Crosses
This will be interesting to see what everyone says. I haven't tracked enough of them going both ways to really know. Though some brugs definitely pod much easier than others and some definitely produce higher quality pollen.
I would think that it is more what traits each have in common with each other that come out more in their offspring. Though there are definitely more dominant traits in certain brugs. For example I will use EP for color and Rothkirch for tendrils. But what do I know? LOL
I have read that you should use a double for a mom if you want double offspring. However last year a hybridizer that specializes in doubles told me she had great luck in using a single Mom pollinated with a double to get double babies. But perhaps it was very potent doubles she was using. LOL
I also have heard not to cross a double with a double because you get too many deformed flowers. So it could be they are just too doubled when they flower.
Are you getting ready to make like a bee this next year, Jackie?
Lol, Bzzzzzzzzzz. I think I need more stock to work with first, but that will hopefully come.
Is it true that suavs tend to dominate, and also create a higher percentage of whites? I am thinking I read these things somewhere, I just cannot remember, lol.
I think the science behind the brugs is very interesting.
The common trait factor makes sense to me.
I am wondering if reversing the order of mother and donor creates any significant variances, but I imagine that one would need a significant batch of offspring to compare.
Kell, thanks for the answer. I appreciate it!
Jackie, i hope this thread will shed some light on what u are looking for http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/87343.html

Hello MaVie, So happy to see you! :)
Two great threads. Yes, this is informtion that I want to know.
I remember that you are awesome at research, thank you!
I have read them once, now to go back and try to retain, lol.
Jackie from what I have seen in the crosses I have made and knowing the background of the Brugs I am using I have found that the seedlings can take on the characteristics of either or both parents.
As an example if you cross Butterfly x Whiskers or visa versi the seedlings can have characteristics of Rothkirch, Ocre,Aurea Gold and Charles Grimaldi.
Butterfly =Rothkirch x Ocre
Whiskers =Aurea Gold x Charles Grimaldi.
I've made pink x pink crosses before and came out with several pink seedlings and one yellow one which came from a yellow gene in one of the parents backgrounds.
I also found a much higher percentage of double seedlings when using a double for the mother plant and a single as the pollen donor.
I have learned from Monika how important it is to know the background of the plants you are using for hybridizing as it is the genes in the parents that you are passing on to your seedlings.
hi Jackie. u are lucky cause i have those threads book marked. if i have to depend on my memory, i will never fine it. LOL.
Lol MaVie, I know just what you mean!!
Terry, thank you so much. I see why the genetics of each individual comes into play with each cross.
(Thank you too, Monika!) I truly appreciate the experience that you each have.
Forgive me if this is a silly question, but is there a way to learn more about the parentage of brugs? Looking through the plant files, I didn't see too much in the way of crosses in descriptions, although I must admit I haven't been through them all.

hope u find what u are looking for Jackie
Thanks again MaVie!!, I glanced through it really quickly (Evelyn Woods speed reading course, lol) and this is extremely helpful.
Great to bump the thread as I think this will explain alot to newer growers like myself.
I always like to know the "why's."
Now to go back to read more in depth. :)

like i said u are lucky cause i had them on bookmark. i also printed the thread so i do not need to go on line to read. takes me time to read and understand due to English as a 2nd language. not an easy thing to do for a bilingual person.
any informative thread i see i bookmark or i print the important parts of the thread... that way i can go back and pickup a few pointers here and there.
MaVie, more importantly I am lucky to know you!
I like the idea of printing records, especially in a house where I have to fight three people for internet time.
Easy to pull out and read at my own pace.
A great big thank you for everyone's help.
Jackie
Jackie u got dmail.
