My favorite brug was brought in from outside before the first frost. She had lots of buds so i put her in the living room with a nice window, she seems really happy. What will happen if i never move her to the chilly garage where i've over-wintered her before?
Do they HAVE to go dormant?
nothing. i over winter my maya in the house and she never fully goes dormant. she does slow down some but nothing will happen.
imzadi is right. It will do fine in front of the window.
Just keep a watchful eye on the leaves for spider mites. They seem to like a nice warm house in the winter.
Hi Melissa! How are you guys doing?
I can only tell you my own experience. I have never had mine go dormant. And in the hot spots in Southern Ca they don't either.
I do not fertilize the outside ones in winter so they do not really grow, but they keep their leaves and I even get an odd bloom or 2.
The ones in my hoophouse don't really grow much either but I have never heated it. This year it is being heated for all my fancy tropicals. I can't wait to see if I get brug blooms all winter. LOL
I have kept smaller ones that are real special to me in my dining room which has lots of light all winter, and I have fertilized them all winter and they do great. They grow too in there!
I wonder if people who have real greenhouses keep them actively growing all winter and flowering.
So I say go for it. LOL
Kell, mine bloomed for me in January in a heated greenhouse. I kept the night temps about 45 and no heat during the day. Our lows drop into the low 20's at night. So they did pretty good.
Kell, if you and Lali are both in Northern California. you guys don't have things go dormant out side with the night temps getting that low?
I just remember Kell saying that not much of her plants go dormant in the winter, I didn't realize your temps got that low at night time.
kathy
Mine don't go completely dormant for me in the greenhouse, but they do slow down. They don't need as much watering or fussing in the winter for me. I sometimes miss the fussing. :-) Since we were 90 degrees today, it seems funny to talk about going dormant. I think fall has decided to skip Southern California and go right back to summer.
We were warm here too, Mary. Just a beautiful day! Life can be so wonderful. I just got in from my walk with my husband and the air is so crisp and clean. I love it.
Do you get lots of rain where you are, Mary? I was surprised to hear that Mary gets as cold as she does for she is in Southern California.
Kathy, I live right by the San Francisco Bay so I am much warmer here than where Lali is north of me. We can get a few frosts but only slight and only for a short period. I am too cold for plumerias though and some begonias and possibly tropical vireyas that I have been madly collecting. And every once in a great while we get hit with a bad freeze. Though actually I might not be too cold but I am too wet. Our rainy season is now thru April. We had our first rain the other day in 6 months. We get no rain at all for months and months and then it starts and goes on and on. Weather in the 50s and 40s when it is so wet spells rot for a lot of tropical plants.
Lali girl, I forgot you have a real greenhouse. LOL. And that you too have brugs.
I just realized that my Plumies are out in the open still! Need to move them to the greenhouse tomorrow before I'm sorry! We do get quite a bit colder than Kell's area. And I'm in a really cold micro-climate here too. BUT the Brugs were happy all last winter. If left out, they do die to the ground.
We get almost no rain here, unless it's an Elnino (spelling?) year. There are a lot of micro climates here. I get light frost sometimes in the winter, and about 5-15 degrees warmer in the daytime than people closer to the ocean. I'm about 15 miles from the ocean by the way the crow flies. There are a lot of rolling hills, and a friend of mine within walking distance gets hard frost. Go figure. She raises tomatoes and has to have a hoop house in the winter or she loses some.
Lali traded her warmth for acres and acres of great land. She is land rich and I get so jealous of her. But where I am, no land but great moderate weather! Not cold, not hot.
Boy Mary, you might have me beat for a great place to live. Are you real hot in summer? I need temps no warmer than in the 70s or all my fat melts. Are the yards real big?
I have been internet surfing looking for a place to move to for when Tom retires. I have been looking at Cambria this week. The weather looks so perfect there. Not too hot, not too cold and I could buy right on the ocean. It just would be so hard to leave all my friends behind. Sniff Sniff.
I used to be able to say we weren't too hot in the summer - but after last summer I can no longer say that. I wish my fat would melt in the heat! Just give me a lyposuction wand and I could remove it as it started to melt. I could be thin again like I was before back problems. Sigh
If you move to Cambria you'll have to share the beach with these guys. Hey, they make me look slim. I think I'll hang around them for awhile!
OH man, Sanfransisco ha? I have only dreamed of going throught that city, maybe a vacation one day will take us there. One can only hope LOL
kathy
LOL Mary. I actually look like the one on the left so I would fit right in. We to had that hot spell, we got to 89 I think and I died. What I neglected to mention is by nightfall when the temp drops to 55 my fat solidifies and boy does that hurt. LOL.
Oh Kathy. San Francisco is a magical place for a gardener. You have to go and see the Conservatory of Flowers and go for a long walk thru the San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum. Truly 2 huge joys in my life.
Not to mention the incredible restaurants there too which is part of the reason why I have so much prime fat on me. My husband and I both love good food.
Here is Zuzu of Rose Forum fame in the bamboo grove at the San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum. We have such fun there.
hey you forgot the Zuzu!
YES Kathy, come to San Fran! We'll show you the garden hot spots!!
Kell, Cambria is too far. How will we shop?
LOL Lali, that was foremost in my mind too. Sniff sniff.
Oh I apologize to poor Zuzu. I was cooking tonight so I was running in and out. I actually made an edible dinner and Tom even said he liked it.
Gosh, I am glad I am friends with Melissa or she might be mad at me for chatting so much.
And here is Zuzu!!
Chat away!
That photo isn't at bamboo sorcery is it?
