Hello fellow gardeners. I am not a Texan, but was advised to post my question here as
I may have better luck here than in the Upper Midwest Gardening.
I located the seeds for purple prarie clover. Really wanted both purple and white,
but maybe next year. Since the wait time is measured in YEARS, I really don't want
to goof it - it's too high on my wish list for it's nitrogen fixing qualities and drought tolerance.
If anybody successfully started it from seed, please advise me. I really want it to be
a success. Can I sow it in the fall or should I do the outside winter sowing method or what?
prairie clover from seed
I sowed mine in a pot in August and they are about 1" tall now. Since you are in WI you might want to wait until spring to plant. They seem to be slow growing for me. I did not know about a white variety. Do you have any pictures?
tobydmv,
Here's a link to one of site with a picture of more than just the flower http://www.fireflyforest.com/flowers/whites/white82.html
I was hoping to start some seeds by winter sowing method I recently learned about. I have enough to risk. But I do want to get some plants at least one way :)
Enya, those sure are prety plants, I hope they work well for you.
Josephine.
This site has great info for your area on planting prairies:
http://www.prairiemoon.com/
And this site is very good for info too:
http://www.seedsource.com/
Both sites, esp. the second, have great info on planting and prairie restoration--any kind of seeds and specific seed info too.
Debbie
Debbie,
Thank you for links. Great germination info. I am getting white clover from them for the innoculant.
