I recently posted a Classified Ad on daves garden for tubers of this amazing plant. This is one of the largest growing Amorphophallus I have. It does great in the ground every summer and is easy to store each winter. Here are some photos of it flowering and a link to the ad

Amorphophallus Paeonifolius
Here is a close up of the stems. Most people mistake this plant for a small odd tree. I get more comments on this plant than just about any in my garden. It seems once they find out what it flowers they get a bit scared about the smell and strangness of the flower. But the flower only last a few days and usually only smells for one day. I have been in the local newspaper over the flowering of this plant.
You have dmail :-)
Sharon
Dmail from me, too. I love amorphs, because they can grow huge in one season and are tropical-looking and unique, and the "cherry on top" is they take up little space and are easy to store in winter. The bloom, although I wouldn't say it's pretty..... IS pretty unique looking, just stay up wind of it the day or 2 it smells bad. I did get a smaller growing amorph bulb this fall, (can remember the name)- green leaves with red edges, can't wait to see it, next summer. Thanks Brian.-B
i know this is a pretty old posting..but i know brian checks things out
here..so heres hoping u see this brian..:)
i guess u dont carry paeonifolius anymore.. but from your one
pic with nice vegetative growth potted up..
my question is on the pot.. its a huge pot..but not deep..
did u find the paeonifolius did good in this pot??
i have a good sized corm.. about 10"across.. 5 1/2 " tall..
i dont know if it will bloom for me this yr..but should get a nice
sized vegetative growth..if i grow it well..:)
so my question is on the huge pot u used on large corms...
with my titanums, and even konjac..i use slightly deeper pots. mostly
reason is so i can bury the corm..and give some room at bottom of pot
as well..
what do u think.. also..please..anyone else.. hope u jump in too....
much thanks..
Awesome! I have one Konjac waking up currently. Growing about 1/2" a day currently.
mine are slowly..we get a week of "sort of nice" weather.. then..back
down into chilly winter..
sigh..LOL.. guess spring will show up when it does..
nice tommy !!
take pics.. i learn so much from u all..
much thanks...
very cool tommy..sigh..im jealous man..
mine are still sort of slumbering..i guess..LOL
i have a couple that have woke up..just not doing any growing
like your flower petiole.. very cool !!!!!!!!!!!!
i have maybe 5 large konjac corms that are flowering age
this yr.. one pretty good sized..around 11"across..so im hoping to
get a nice flower from it..:)
?? do u grow paeonifolius ??
would like some that grow it chat them up too...
good growing tommy !!!!!!!!!!!
my paeonifolius show some signs of waking up..but theyve
been this way for over a month..
???
are they slow to wake up..or just start growing when they
are good and ready???
the biggest one i thought might be flowering size..but this
being 1st time growing paeonifolius not familar with their
habits..
When they sprout it's very hot and usually the rains haven't started. They don't need rain to start, just very hot. The days are usually high 30's C, nights down to the low 20's C. If there is any rain it's generally a short savage afternoon storm, then humid/sticky into the night. So don't over do the water. If it's too cool then all you'll get is rot.
thanks tropic.. i'll back off on watering..
and maybe put on heat pad.. around 80F (27C) maybe that will
kick it into gear..:)
Definitely back off on the watering. But once they've grown (and they have it hot) any amount of water is okay. Lots grow along the rivers here so during the wet season they periodically get totally covered by flood water. I've got back in when the flood waters had receded and the paeoniifolius leaves were covered in silt. Subsequent rains wash them clean again, but sometimes they flood again. If you look back to the thread I started about the amorph growing in water you'll see it lasted 6 weeks. A larger tuber I don't know, maybe longer, maybe not. But cold and wet and they're irreversibly on their way to becoming complete mush.
much thanks again tropic !!!
you said they responded to heat..when it gets warm there..they
come out of dormancy and growing..so.. i put the big one.and small one
i have in a box.. put in a ringed out damp piece of newspaper (to help raise
humidity some) and put the box on heat pad..
:) i am monitoring the inside heat.. its hitting around 85F / 29C and staying
there.. newspaper goes dry in 1 day..so i repeat..its not alot of moisture..as u
recommended..
so..hoping i can kick start them a bit... :)
we got snow today???? what the &*(#$^()# LOL
Don't mention that word in front of the paeoniifolius, they might go into irreversible shock. It's certainly a different world there. We're moving into late wet season, although more heavy rain is expected next week. But I set up a large pond on the edge of my swamp. Water from the swamp runs into the pond, overflows into another pond, and then runs back into the swamp again. I've been monitoring the temperatures of the water. Water flowing in from the swamp middle of the day is 38C to 39C, flowing out it's about the same. Early morning before sun up water flowing in is 27C, flowing out it's 29C. If it's overcast and heavy rain water flowing in is 26C to 27C. I should wade out and check the deeper water at the bottom. Waterlilies provide some shade so the water should be cooler deep down. My dam, however, is completely shaded by trees so the water there stays at 28C, just nicely cool for swimming.
u be careful there tropic.. u live in croc country...
ponds like that i bet are drawing cards for them... arent they??
dont go swimmin in no croc pond !!!
:)
ya.. temps stay pretty steady in set up i have for my paeonifolius..
so hopefully i can nudge them into growing soon!!! :)
tropic..your advice on warmth bringing my paeonifolius out
of dormancy is working.. yea !!
i have them in a box..sitting on heat mat..temperature in box
(with moist paper) is staying 89-90F (32C) there is a big growth
pushing out on top of largest corm..and roots are comming out from
everywhere..
YEA !!!
much thanks for your thoughts on paeonifolius...
??? so the flowering of paeonifolius if i understand..is opposite to
many other amorphs?? vegetative growth..and then.. after vegy growth
and corm is mature..it flowers??
still figuring things out with paeonifolius.. :)
love these plants....
Congratulations on the sudden growth. But no, they're the same as other Amorphs, if no flower then a leaf. If a flower, then leaf comes later when flower is gone. Because they form a clump very quickly, from baby tubers, when the flower comes there's often a number of leaves around, but they're not from the flowering tuber.
thanks tropic..i didnt think it was different..but i got some darn notion
in my mind..LOL
looking foward to growing paeonifolius..
The is the plant that came in with a load of soil the previous year. Last season it was one plant, now it's multiple. Photos were taken today. First photo, it's being smothered by an over exuberant Mandevilla. Second photo is with the Mandevilla cut back (over half). Third photo is the rear side of the Amorphs showing a lot of the petioles. Fourth photo is of a bewildered mother trying to get her beauty sleep in a Mandevilla and being rudely awoken by some inconsiderate sod re-arranging her bedroom. You can see the bewildered look in her eyes, all 8 of them.
?? my largest paeoniifolius seems to be shrinking in height..
is this to be expected??
more energy going into the corm..and the foliage shrinking a bit??
leaves look good..no disease,fungus,insects,foliage looks good..just
its shrank by maybe 10"
what do u all think???
i dont want to bother the buried corm.. everything looks fine still..so dont want
to rock the boat..
thanks...
You mean the petiole is shorter? That seems odd, not unusual for the rachis and leaflets to sag down. I often tap the petiole lightly. They sound hollow the older they are. Especially noticeable when they're in decline and the nutrients are being withdrawn.
i thought odd too tropic..
yea.. the petiole is shorter..
plant looks great.. ive kicked up the fertilizing..it was a nice sized corm when i planted it..
sure took time to get going..but..i guess paeoniifolius are slow growers without warm temps..
I just got one of these not long ago. I can see I'm in need of a bigger pot though. There are two of them in this pot and babies compared to yours. Looking forward to growing it though. !
