Butterfly season is here!!! I am excited to have my first zebra longwing - it showed up today and has been sunning itself on the cape honeysuckle. It's also nectared from the lantana and duranta. It's a tad beaten up but...a zebra is a zebra!!!
Have also had a julia dryas hanging around for the past five days...that too has some battered wings but it is always nice to see those too.
Also had a Mexican Yellow visit for a couple of days.

My first Zebra Longwing...tattered but it's in MY yard!!!
Hip, hip, Hurray, Cat! You get some awesome butterflies in your yard! I love the yellow butterflies but rarely ever get them in my yard. Is there other host plants beside Cassia that attracts them?
Cat you are so luck with the butterflies. You must live in the perfect location.
Yes, guess you could call this area close to perfect when you can go out butterflying in the middle of "winter" - but the 100+ temperatures in summer are rough!!! :o)
The majority of the yellows and hairstreaks use legumes as larval hosts...so most plants in the fabaceae family work - guess it's just a matter of taste with the butterflies and cats. We have lots of native cassias that grow wild in undeveloped land...and thousands of sulphurs and lysides always flitting around.

Donna, I was just thinking the same thing the other day but I did remember quickly that the temps there were probably worse than mine.
Cat, has your town had the butterfly festival yet??
Gorgeous Cat!!
wonderful! I can't imagine having all these beauties in my yard
