It has been suggested that the plant in your image is of a different plant than Calathea insignis. A quick Google image search http://images.google.com/images?q=Calathea+insignis shows a different plant with prominant herring-bone colouration on the leaves.

I will have to go back and find this one, it looks like I took it at Berkeley Botanical.

Well just looking at the other images under this in PF, mine is like all of them posted. In fact there are a few of the same plant, LOL! And it looks like mine was taken at Berkeley Botanical, just like Sue's.

OK, I found the name tag Calathea insignis so I got that part right. And it is tagged from Berkeley Botanical Garden.

All I can say is it is hard to know the truth if you are not an expert like I am not and evidently it is hard to know if you are an expert like Berkeley Bot. LOL.

As far as google and another recent plant ID on it ( http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/805904/ ), you really can't go by Google I found. On this one, Calathea insignis, I found 4 photos that were similar to the one I posted labeled Calathea insignis too. And 5 photos on there were from TopTropicals with the bright leaf that they labeled with 2 names, Calathea insignis and Calathea lancifolia. LOL. What is a girl to do?
LOL

So what is right??

All I can say if your suggestor is knowledgeable on these in his own right, go for it but if he is just going by google, that is not necessarily reliable at all.

Lol, Kell! Take a look for this name, calathea crotalifera, and let me know if you think it fits. Label mistakes at the botanical gardens happens and I volunteer locally to help maintain the labels and correct them. I'm just guessing but maybe the common names were mixed up on this one - just guessing. Here's the discussion on Calif_Sue's image: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/628059/

I'm going to try and see if the notifier of the images has a suggestion for the correct name for this.

Thanks again
